The first Kansas City Chiefs depth chart for the 2018 season was released on Saturday. Let’s dive into what it looks like as of now.

Kansas City Chiefs football is so close! Don’t believe me? Well, the first depth chart is out and while it’s not all that shocking, it still is a sign that the NFL season is right around the corner.

Let’s start with the no brainer position at quarterback. Obviously Patrick Mahomes is the starter and his backup as of now is Chad Henne. Matt McGloin and rookie Chase Litton will be battling for the third string position, which McGloin currently holds on the depth chart.

At running back, Kareem Hunt is the starter with Spencer Ware as his backup. Ware would have been the starter last year, but he was injured in a preseason game, which paved the way for Hunt to have the rookie season that he had. Third string running back is Damien Williams as of now.

Wide receiver is another position with no surprises. Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins are the two starters with Chris Conley and Demarcus Robinson right behind them on the depth chart. De’Anthony Thomas and Jehu Chesson sat fifth and sixth followed by Gehrig Dieter, Marcus Kemp, and Byron Pringle.

Tight end could be a riveting position to watch this preseason. We all know Travis Kelce is the unquestioned starter, but the backup position is up for grabs. Demetrius Harris sits in that spot as of now, but that’s likely just due to his familiarity to the system. Some of the guys sitting behind Harris are Jace Amaro, Alex Ellis, and Tim Wright. Blake Mack is a name to watch too, but he is also listed with the receivers.

Turning to the offensive line, the starting five are Eric Fisher, Cameron Erving, Mitch Morse, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, and Mitchell Schwartz. Erving being listed as the starting left guard is a bit surprising considering he didn’t do much last year, but he must be showing more than Parker Ehinger at the moment.

Defensively there aren’t many surprises. Chris Jones and Allen Bailey are the starting defensive ends. This could be Bailey’s last chance to prove himself and honestly… It wouldn’t be shocking if the Chiefs opted to cut him before the regular season gets here.

Xavier Williams is the starting nose tackle while Justin Houston, Reggie Ragland, Anthony Hitchens, and Dee Ford are the four starting linebackers. Steven Nelson and Kendall Fuller are the two starting cornerbacks with David Amerson and rookie Tremon Smith as the backups.

Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen look to be the two safeties, but Sorensen getting cut wouldn’t be a surprise. If that happens, Eric Murray or Leon McQuay could slide into his spot.

Obviously we know that special teams will consist of Harrison Butker handling the kicking duties, Dustin Colquitt once again punting gems almost every time, and James Winchester as the long snapper. Tyreek Hill is listed as the punt returner while De’Anthony Thomas is at kick returner.

Look, this isn’t all that riveting, I know, but it gives me an excuse to write about every position in detail and that should excite Chiefs fans. Preseason football is getting closer and that means regular season football is just a few weeks away!
