The Kansas City Chiefs will have an electric offense in 2018, but one guy who needs to really show something is wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. This is the year for him to prove himself.

This time last year, most Kansas City Chiefs fans were talking about what a good camp Demarcus Robinson was having. He was making great grabs in training camp and seemed to be really finding his groove during the preseason.

Instead, Robinson disappointed greatly during the regular season. He had just 21 receptions for 212 yards with zero touchdowns, but he did have an important touchdown catch during the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

I was at training camp on Thursday and Robinson was having himself a day in St. Joseph in front of Chiefs fans. My mom kept asking “Who caught that?” and I’d find myself constantly saying “That’s Demarcus Robinson.” He was wowing in front of the crowd and putting on a show, that’s for sure.

Some might point to Robinson’s prior struggles being that Alex Smith was his quarterback and Smith didn’t get him the ball as much. He had just 39 targets in 2017 yet played in all 16 games, starting half of those.

Smith was better about targeting different guys last year, but still wasn’t able to get Robinson involved as much as fans would have liked him to have been. Even after Chris Conley was injured, we didn’t see much from Robinson and that would have been his time to step into the spotlight.

Patrick Mahomes is a much different quarterback than Smith and we saw his chemistry with Robinson last preseason. He had 127 yards receiving in that final preseason game against the Titans, one in which Mahomes played in quite a bit.

With this being Mahomes’ first year as the man under center, Robinson should be able to be a more visible weapon on offense. The problem is that there are so many other targets, including Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Chris Conley. That’s if you don’t count running backs or tight ends because we all know Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce will be at the forefront of the offense.

It’s been great to see Demarcus Robinson having a good camp so far, but now he has to take the next step and become a reliable target. He’s the fourth receiver on the depth chart and has to be that familiar connection for Mahomes down the field in big moments.

Do you have high hopes for Robinson this year or do you think he’ll continue to disappoint as a Chiefs wide receiver?
