CHIEFS VETERANS THAT COULD BE CUT

CHRIS CONLEY – Wide Receiver

Perhaps outside of this organization’s love affair with De’Anthony Thomas, there is no player that has a greater reputation for doing less on the field than Chris Conley. In two and a half seasons, Conley in his career has yet to rack up 1,000 yards and has hauled in just one touchdown.

Twenty-two players in the NFL caught more passes in 2017 than Conley has hauled in combined for his career and again, 22 players had more yards in 2017 than Conley has had in his career. There are even running backs on that list.

Many will say Conley was in the middle of his career breakout season when he was injured last season. In five games in 2017, Conley hauled in 11 passes for 175 yards. He was on pace for 35 catches for 560 yards and had yet to catch a score. That’s not breaking out.

Between the offense still being willing to throw to the running backs (Damien Williams, Kerwynn Williams are pass catching running backs) and having Travis Kelce (great pass catching tight end) along with sinking big money into speedster Sammy Watkins, where does Conley fit?

Also should point out, it appeared in very limited opportunities that new starter Patrick Mahomes developed a level of confidence and repore with Demarcus Robinson. Could Robinson, at a lower cost than Conley, be the, at best, fourth option in the passing offense?

At this point, Conley is running as the third receiver in camp. However, things can change. Moving on from Conley would save the Chiefs 1.907 million in cap space and create 178K in dead cap space.
