Every year a surprise name or two finds themselves turning in their playbook. Take a quick glance at some possible veterans not long for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Let’s take a look at couple well known names on the Kansas City Chiefs roster that may not be on the roster when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers in week one of the regular season. Salary considerations always play a part in these decisions, but so do long-term considerations and injury history as well. I’m not arguing that any specific player should be released, simply trying to point out some names that may.

CHIEFS VETERANS THAT COULD BE CUT

ALLEN BAILEY – Defensive End

Veterans have and always give way to younger players at this time of year all over the league and this could be no different.  Much of the issue here is do the Chiefs want to use their available depth?

Both 2017 second round pick Tanoh Kpassagnon and 2018 second round pick Breeland Speaks are natural fits to replace Allen Bailey at this spot, and would do so a much lower cap number then Bailey’s 7.968 cap number. Speaks is especially a great fit, considering he is almost identical in size to Bailey coming out of college.

However, both players look like they’ll play outside despite their size and athletic limitations. That limits options to backups like Jarvis Jenkins and Stefan Charles or a rookie such as Dee Liner.

Moving on from Bailey would save the Chiefs 5.968 million against this year’s salary cap with a 2 million dead cap hit. If the Chiefs decide to make a move on free agent corner Bashaud Breeland, this could be a move to free up necessary funds.
