The Kansas City Chiefs are being cautious with running back Kareem Hunt during training camp who is dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in May.

The Kansas City Chiefs started training camp like the rest of the league this week. There have already been players that have been on the sideline doing individual drills or not participating at all. Rookie safety Armani Watts suffered an ankle injury on Monday during the team’s first practice but looks to be back on the field today.

Linebacker Reggie Ragland‘s knee swelled up on the plane to Kansas City as well. He was on the sideline when I attended on Thursday for the first open day to the public. Another player that I noticed not seeing many reps with the team was running back Kareem Hunt. It appears that the team is being cautious with Hunt after he suffered a hamstring injury in May.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Hunt is coming into his second season with the Chiefs after leading the league last season with 1,327 yards on the ground. There’s no doubt that Hunt will remain the starting running back even with the return of former starting running back Spencer Ware who returns from a season-ending injury last preseason.

Brett Veach has brought in a number of running backs this offseason to ensure depth at the running back position. Last year when Ware was injured, the Chiefs had very little depth aside from Hunt and Charcandrick West. The team had a rotation of third-string running backs throughout the season.

To ensure depth this season in case of another injury, Veach has brought in players including UDFA Darrel Willaims, Kerwynn Williams, and Damien Williams. All three of these running backs have the versatility to make an impact in the running and passing game which is vital to make the roster considering the offensive change in 2018.

Kansas City is bringing Hunt along slowly during camp to ensure he is ready for the regular season and doesn’t injure his hamstring anymore than it already was. The only concerning parts to the process is that hamstrings tend to be a nagging injury for quite some time and Hunt needs reps to get his body into football shape. We have seen what very limited preseasons can do as players get hurt early on in the season.
