Referring back to 2015, the Cincinnati Reds believed themselves to be close as well, so when it came time to trade Jonny Cueto and Mike Leake at the deadline, near major league talent was required, specifically near major league pitching.
As history has proven, the Reds blew the deadline by netting low ceiling players due to their restrictions and an over valuation of their own prospects. Similar to when the Royals themselves had specific position requirements when trading outfielder Carlos Beltran and watched it backfire.
If fans want to see an organization of what happens when they try to rush process, this is what can happen. Now, there are new faces everywhere in the organization save for elite hitter Joey Votto, and they are back to the process after drafting in the top 10 the past three seasons. If the Royals try to rush this rebuild, they very possibly bring the process to a halt.
Trading of controllable veterans appears to often net higher returns over the winter. Teams like the Angels, Cardinals, or Nationals could view themselves as contenders this winter, a feeling they don’t feel currently.
Perez could make more sense in the winter, when he can spend a spring training learning the pitching staff as opposed to attempting to learn a new staff on the fly during a playoff chase. But these are three players that can help the rebuild, providing enough pieces to help lead this team to another shot at glory.
