Kansas City Chiefs don’t need to add Eli Rogers to offense
The Kansas City Chiefs have a workout scheduled with former Steelers wide receiver Eli Rogers. This seems like a strange move for a team that really doesn’t need another receiver.
Just a few years ago, Kansas City Chiefs fans would have welcomed any news that linked their football team to a decent wide receiver. Back then, however, the Chiefs went an entire season without having a wide receiver catch a touchdown pass. Things have certainly changed since then.
For one, the Chiefs had one of the best offenses in the league last year. They’ve only added to it for this upcoming season and their current main group of wideouts consists of Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, and Demarcus Robinson. Throw in some under the radar names like Jehu Chesson, Gehrig Dieter, and Byron Pringle and it’s safe to say that wide receiver is a position the Chiefs REALLY don’t need to focus on.
Well, clearly they’re still focusing on it. Adam Schefter tweeted that Eli Rogers, former Steelers wide receiver, has a workout scheduled with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Rogers went undrafted out of Louisville in 2016 and had a nice rookie season in Pittsburgh. He had 48 receptions for 594 yards and three touchdowns while starting in eight games and appearing in13 total.

His second season wasn’t nearly as impressive, with just 149 yards and a touchdown. Rogers was injured in January, but now he appears to be healthy and ready to play football again.
I’m down for the KC Chiefs signing good players, but wide receiver is the least of the team’s concerns. If the Chiefs did bring Rogers in, there wouldn’t be much of a role for him. There’s already a plethora of decent wideouts on the roster this summer and the team should focus on adding players in positions that need the help (cornerback, offensive line, etc).
As mentioned above, the Chiefs already have a strong group at wide receiver. Hill and Watkins will be the two starters, with Watkins being the primary red zone target. Conley and Robinson are both serviceable backups, but could step in as starters if need be. We saw both guys make big strides last year, but Conley got hurt and Robinson didn’t get it going until late in the season.
Patrick Mahomes has a bigger arm and will be targeting a lot of different players this season, but Eli Rogers doesn’t need to be one of those players. It’s always good to work out guys like this, but the Chiefs have no use for Eli Rogers.
Do you think the team should add Eli Rogers?
