Mizzou football is heading into their fourth and final year with Drew Lock as their quarterback. Lock is one of the top quarterback prospects this upcoming season and everyone will be keeping tabs on him.

The Missouri Tigers are coming off a bowl bound season for the first time since 2014 and quarterback Drew Lock was certainly part of why MU performed so well in the second half of the year. As we all remember, the Tigers struggled in the first half of the year, but turned on the gas in the second half.

With that success under their belts, Mizzou football will now hope to make a bigger splash in 2018 and that starts at the quarterback position with Drew Lock. Most of the time, the quarterback is the most known player on every team just because of what the position entails, but Lock could be one of the best players in the nation this year.

Every year, college football gives out the Heisman Trophy to the best player in the sport and Lock is already one of the leading candidates for the prestigious award. The university has even started a Heisman campaign for their quarterback and it’s looking like Lock will be the biggest storyline to watch in Columbia this season.

More from Missouri Tigers

Lock had a great season as a junior in 2017, but opted to return to Missouri for his senior season, which was probably a wise choice. He would have likely been drafted, but probably around the fourth or fifth round. Returning to school and having another top notch season could make the kid a first round pick.

Last year Lock threw for 3,964 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in the Tigers’ 7-5 regular season. The biggest problem for Lock as a junior was that he and the rest of his team couldn’t seem to perform well against the tougher opponents and that will be something to keep an eye on for the 2018 season.

MU was 1-5 at one point last season, getting blown out by South Carolina, Purdue, Auburn, and Georgia and narrowly losing to Kentucky. Lock wasn’t very good in those games, with two of them being against ranked opponents.

The 2018 season has its fair share of tough schools on the schedule including Alabama (in Tuscaloosa), Florida (in Gainesville), and Georgia. In order to be a legitimate contender for the Heisman Trophy, Drew Lock needs to play well every week and his team needs to win games.

Very seldom do we see guys from horrible teams win the award and that’ll be what makes or breaks Lock’s quest for the Heisman Trophy. Can the Missouri Tigers compete against the big dogs and give their quarterback a chance to win the greatest award in college football? Only time will tell.
