BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

DECEMBER 15TH, 2013 VS OAKLAND RAIDERS

After starting off 9-0, the Chiefs ran into a 1-3 skid during Reid’s inaugural season. They handled AFC West rival Oakland in their first meeting earlier on in the season, but playing the black and silver on the road didn’t seem like an easy task. The Raiders ALWAYS played Kansas City tough.

Oakland was 4-9 at the time and had current Chiefs backup/third string quarterback Matt McGloin starting for them in a season that was going down the crapper. McGloin wasn’t great for the Raiders, but kept them in the game.

After an entire season with the defense carrying the Chiefs, the offense FINALLY caught fire and was unstoppable in this game. The defense, on the other hand, could only stop Oakland by forcing turnovers.

Yes, this was the game where Jamaal Charles went off for five touchdowns and Alex Smith also lit things up, throwing for five touchdowns. The Chiefs won 56-31, but the game didn’t feel that out of control while watching it.

The Chiefs led 21-0 after one quarter, but kept letting Oakland crawl their way back into it. The game got as close as 35-31 at one point with the Chiefs then going on to put up 21 unanswered points.

  • Smith went 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns and this was only the beginning of him dominating the Raiders during his time in Kansas City.
  • Charles actually had a poor day running the ball, carrying the rock eight times for 20 yards and a touchdown. It was his receiving skills that made this a legendary game for one of the best Chiefs backs ever. He had eight receptions for 195 yards (!!!!) and four touchdowns.
  • Sean McGrath (remember him?) had the other receiving touchdown.
  • Matt McGloin went 18 of 35 for 297 yards while tossing two touchdowns and four interceptions.
  • Eric Berry had two interceptions while Derrick Johnson and Ron Parker each had one. Berry took one of his picks back for a touchdown.
  • Rashad Jennings racked up 91 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for the silver and black.

This was the most explosive the Chiefs offense looked during the 2013 regular season and it made us wonder just how good this team could have been had the offense and defense both played well at the same time. It was so weird how the defense was SO good throughout the first half of the season and the offense was inept, but then things completely flip-flopped. This game was living proof of that.

The Kansas City Chiefs swept the Oakland Raiders for the first time since 2006 and this game was a preview of what was to come for how good Reid would coach against the Raiders.
