BEST GAMES OF THE ANDY REID ERA

SEPTEMBER 7, 2017 VS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

No one was giving the Kansas City Chiefs much of a chance to win their season opener in 2017. They were playing on the road in New England against the reigning Super Bowl champion Patriots, who had overcome a 28-3 deficit to top the Falcons in that year’s championship.

The Patriots were having a celebration like none other in Foxboro and the Chiefs were expected to sit back and let the champs stay on top. That did not end up happening, as the Chiefs walked out of Gillette Stadium with a 42-27 victory, stunning the Patriots and the entire NFL world.

The game looked like it was going to get out of control early, as the Pats scored on their first offensive drive. On KC’s first offensive drive, rookie Kareem Hunt fumbled on his first ever NFL carry. Just the Chiefs’ luck, right?

It looked as though the Pats were going to go up 14-0 in no time, but the Chiefs stopped New England on a fourth and one. From there, the game got much more interesting and the Patriots only had a three-point lead at the half. It could have been much worse considering how the game started.

The Chiefs took the lead early in the third quarter, but the Patriots stormed right back and at one point were up 27-21 over Kansas City. The Chiefs, however, would score 21 unanswered points to hand the Patriots an 0-1 record. It was a remarkable game and one that I’ll remember for a long time.

  • This was the NFL season opener and was on Thursday night.
  • Have a game, Alex Smith! The Chiefs signal caller went 28 of 35 for 368 yards and four touchdowns. He out dueled Tom Brady, which is a phrase no one expected to hear.
  • After fumbling on his first NFL carry, Kareem Hunt dazzled in his debut, rushing for 148 yards and a touchdown and tacking on 98 receiving yards with two touchdowns. He was a beast!
  • Tyreek Hill showed he could indeed be a number one wide receiver, catching seven passes for 133 yards and a score.
  • Tom Brady got outplayed by the Chiefs once again, throwing for 267 yards and no touchdowns.
  • Justin Houston had two of the three sacks on Tom Brady.

Even though the Patriots did indeed advance further in the 2017 playoffs than the Chiefs did, this will always be a memorable game. No one was giving Kansas City ANY chance to knock off the defending champs, which made the win even sweeter.
