While the NFL Top 100 might not mean a lot to Kansas City Chiefs fans, it should tell them something about the 2018 team’s defense. No defensive Chief appeared on the countdown.

We all saw the Kansas City Chiefs once powerful defense become old nearly overnight in 2017 and the team is now getting younger on that side of the ball. With that said, however, a younger squad means growing pains and that’s what the Chiefs defense will be looking at in 2018.

The NFL does the Top 100 list every year in which the players themselves vote on who the best in the league are. It has to be a pretty tough choice for them, as I’m sure almost all of them would put themselves at number one. Anyway, so far, three members of the Kansas City Chiefs have made the list and unsurprisingly, all have been on offense.

It took until number 40 for the first Chief to appear and that was Tyreek Hill, who actually dropped from his spot at 36. Running back Kareem Hunt debuted 33rd on the list while tight end Travis Kelce just heard his name called at the 24th top.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

While we still have 20 spots to be announced, it’s doubtful that any defensive Chiefs will make that list. Justin Houston could be a possibility, but somehow his nine and a half sacks don’t stack up to the old Houston.

Had Eric Berry been healthy this year, he’d have surely made the list this year, but that wasn’t the case (though somehow J.J. Watt keeps making it despite only starting nine games the last two years…).

Even new Chief Kendall Fuller didn’t make the list, which was a bit surprising. Had Fuller made the cut, he’d have been at the beginning of the countdown and it’d have been during his D.C. days. Perhaps that will be motivation for the new Chiefs cornerback.

Some could argue that the Chiefs did have a defensive player make the list in Marcus Peters, but I’ll stomp on that argument right away. Peters isn’t on the team anymore, so it doesn’t count toward the team’s total when it comes to players on the list.

At the end of the day, this isn’t telling us anything we didn’t already know. The Kansas City Chiefs have a mostly young defense and that will result in them getting exposed in several games this year. Some might be more optimistic than others, but I don’t think the Chiefs defense will be very good this season.

Hopefully we’re all pleasantly surprised with how the defense performs in 2018, but if not, yay for having to score 50+ points a game! It’ll be just like 2003 all over again.
