Kansas City Chiefs add a few quarterbacks after the draft
The 2018 NFL Draft has come and gone and the Kansas City Chiefs opted not to draft a quarterback this year. They’ve invited some to training camp though.
It wouldn’t have been surprising had the Kansas City Chiefs decided to add a quarterback late in the 2018 NFL Draft, but they didn’t end up doing so. Obviously Patrick Mahomes is the starter and Chad Henne is the likely backup, but it’s nice to add some depth there for training camp and preseason.
Instead, the Chiefs passed on the Riley Fergusons and Logan Woodsides of the world and focused predominantly on defense in the draft. Since the draft wrapped up, however, the Chiefs have extended invites to a pair of quarterbacks for training camp.
The first quarterback the Chiefs brought on was Indiana signal caller Richard Lagow. Lagow received a camp invite.
Lagow spent two years as the Hoosiers quarterback and threw for 5,298 yards, 34 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions. He was interception-prone, especially in the 2016 season (17 picks that year!), but his build (6’6″, 240 pounds) is what makes him an enticing prospect to have in camp.
The other quarterback given an opportunity by the Chiefs is Chase Litton out of Marshall. He played quarterback for the Thundering Herd for three seasons and threw for 8,335 yards, 72 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions during that time.
Litton’s numbers are much better than Lagow’s, but he was playing in Conference USA, which is a little easier competition than in the Big Ten (which is where Lagow was playing). Litton is an intriguing player with the nice stats he put up and could be a name to watch this summer.

When looking at the Chiefs’ quarterback depth chart, only Mahomes and Henne are shoe-ins to make the team. The Chiefs did sign Matt McGloin not long ago, but he’ll have to fight for that third spot on the roster. He’s got a better shot than the two newbies, but not by much.
Quarterback is always the most interesting position no matter what because it’s the most important position in all of football. This is a whole new feeling with Mahomes taking the reigns for the 2018 season, but now we get to speculate about who the third stringer will be. My money is that McGloin still earns the job, but Litton could be someone to watch.
Perhaps more quarterbacks will be joining at some point, but for now, these two new quarterbacks should provide some buzz. Let’s see if either can stick on the roster past the preseason.
