The 2018 NFL Draft is just days away. Excitement is building as fans anticipate who their team will select in pursuit of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy at season’s end.

While teams are fully focused on the newest crop of draft prospects they’re also keeping an eye on available free agents. Should the Kansas City Chiefs try to sneak in a good free agent signing before the draft?

Recently released Dez Bryant and former division rival C.J. Anderson are intriguing names, but Chiefs Kingdom has likely noticed the already loaded up wide receiver and running back rooms. The offense as a whole looks pretty stellar with the hope that Patrick Mahomes plays to his potential. The defensive side of the ball is where a sneaky signing would be most beneficial.

New Chief Kendall Fuller might benefit from having former Washington Redskins teammate Brashaud Breeland in the secondary alongside him. At only 26 years old, Breeland ranks number four on the list of available free agents and is the highest ranked cornerback. He was expected to sign with the Carolina Panthers, but failed the physical, which voided the signing. The Chiefs would be wise to approach with caution, but signing him is at least worth looking into.

Another former Redskin, Junior Galette, is also still available. He is a little older at age 30, but would add talented depth at the outside linebacker position. His presence could demand a little more attention from opposing offensives and help free up Justin Houston to become the sack specialist once again.

Navarro Bowman has seen his fair share of injuries in recent seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, but did put together a decent bounce back season for AFC West rival Oakland Raiders in 2017. Adding an aggressive and experienced middle linebacker behind Reggie Ragland and Anthony Hitchens would be nice insurance.

There are three available safeties who are all 27 years old or younger – Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro, and Tre Boston. Reid is a 2013 first round pick who has been somewhat mired in his participation in the National Anthem protests.

Vaccaro is also a 2013 first round draft pick, who ended last season with injuries that required surgery. Boston just spend a season with the Los Angeles Chargers where he tallied five interceptions and 56 tackles. Any of these three safeties would put a decent talent next to All-Pro safety Eric Berry.

It’s hard to say whether or not these players have garnered much attention from other teams or if they’re just waiting until after the draft to find a good landing spot. At any rate, adding one of these available free agents would be a welcome surprise to beef up a Kansas City Chiefs defense that has needs. Might a sneaky signing happen before the names are called on draft night?
