If there’s one thing we know Kansas City Royals fans are good at, it’s voting. That was put to good use, as fans voted on the “All-Time Royals Team” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the franchise.

Anytime people are asked to vote, recency bias usually plays itself out. People have short-term memories, especially when it comes to sports, and the Kansas City Royals‘ All-Time Team that fans voted on proved that sentiment. It’s definitely a “what have you done for me lately” type of situation when it comes to voting in sports.

With Opening Day on Thursday, the Royals finished announcing their top 50 and no one was surprised that George Brett was number one. I doubt they even had him listed and just automatically slotted him in there. He deserves to be the top ranked player in Royals history, so no arguments from me there.

After Brett, however, the list definitely gets young. In fact, four of the next nine players were within this recent wave of Royals success. I’m not knocking those players at all, but some of them might not have been worthy of a top ten spot on this list.

Here was the top ten:

  1. George Brett
  2. Salvador Perez
  3. Bret Saberhagen
  4. Frank White
  5. Eric Hosmer
  6. Dan Quisenberry
  7. Mike Moustakas
  8. Bo Jackson
  9. Lorenzo Cain
  10. Hal McRae

The most notable thing is that Bo Jackson should NOT be in the top ten. Was Jackson a great athlete? Yes, absolutely! That wall catch he had during his days in Kansas City was INSANE and Jackson provided a lot of great highlight reels for the franchise.

With that said, however, Jackson does not deserve to be the eighth greatest player on this list. He spent just five years in Kansas City and had a batting average of .250 after his Royals days were over.

Now we’ll dive into the youth movement here. I wasn’t alive when the Royals won the World Series in 1985 or to see those guys play in their prime, but I know Frank White should be number two on this list.

It’s nothing against Salvador Perez, but he’s not the second greatest player in Kansas City Royals history. Frank White’s career was second best to Brett’s Hall of Fame career and seeing him ranked fourth is a disappointment.

Obviously a lot of the people who voted on this were either young or just recently got into Royals baseball (or both) because Moustakas and Cain probably wouldn’t be in the top ten on most other lists. It’s not a diss on either of those guys, but it’s the truth.

People were stuffing the ballot box for Moose and Cain because they were a part of that magnificent run in 2015. I don’t blame them, but it definitely skewed the voting.

Perez would still probably make the top five (maybe right at five) due to being the best catcher in franchise history, making five All-Star Games, and being the World Series MVP. He’s a hell of a player for sure, just not second best all-time.

What do you think of the All-Time Team rankings that Kansas City Royals fans voted on?
