Kansas City Chiefs have no use for Johnny Manziel

The Kansas City Chiefs were one of several teams that went and watched former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel throw last week. Hopefully that’s as far as this goes.

Disclaimer: This isn’t a post intended to bash on Johnny Manziel as a person or as a quarterback. I’m actually rooting for Manziel to make it with a team and become a better person than what we previously saw back when he was in Cleveland.

The reason I’m writing this post is because the Kansas City Chiefs don’t need another veteran quarterback on their depth chart. Chad Henne is now the backup for the Chiefs and he’ll be the mentor to second-year man Patrick Mahomes.

The need for a third string quarterback is certainly there, but that can be filled in the draft or by an undrafted rookie. Johnny Manziel is not going to be that for the Chiefs, so let’s not bother with the “OMG LET’S SIGN HIM!” talk.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Manziel was one of the quarterbacks that the Chiefs were reportedly interested in back when he entered the draft in 2014, but the Browns ended up jumping in front of them to nab him. Manziel then flamed out after just two seasons in Cleveland and actually played his final NFL game against the Chiefs.

Johnny Football trying to make a return has garnered a lot of attention (it is the offseason after all) so of course his Pro Day would be heavily reported. The Chiefs being there doesn’t necessarily mean they’re serious about wanting to bring him to Kansas City, as the pro day was also for San Diego State players to show off their skills.

So while all of this is a fun story and definitely something that Chiefs fans want to hear about, I wouldn’t count on it happening. Manziel coming to Kansas City would bring nothing but unwanted storylines.

As soon as Mahomes were to struggle, the fans would be chanting “We want Johnny!” and you just know ESPN, SportsCenter, and basically everywhere would be all over that crap. It’d be a never ending circus with Manziel in town and that’s not what you want to have lurking over your team with a young quarterback trying to get the hang of things.

I’m rooting for Johnny Football to get a job with an NFL team and redeem himself, but it doesn’t need to be with the Chiefs. There’s no use for him in Kansas City and that’s definitely a good thing.
