Kansas City Chiefs news mostly surrounds free agency and there’s been a lot of buzz about who will be the backup quarterback for the Chiefs in 2018.
The Kansas City Chiefs meant business this year in free agency. In years past, they’ve been a little too strapped for cash, but the money freed up this offseason and that allowed Brett Veach and company to be aggressive when it came to free agents on the market.
The first big move the Chiefs made was bringing in Sammy Watkins on a three-year deal worth $48 million. Watkins was the top receiver on the free agent market and the Chiefs locked him down with a big time contract. He’ll now be sharing the top two receiving spots with Tyreek Hill and Chiefs fans have to be loving that image.
The second big move that Kansas City took part in was signing Anthony Hitchens to a five-year deal worth nine million per season. Hitchens adds a key run stopper to this Chiefs defense and that’s certainly not something to overlook, even if the price tag was a little steep.

The Chiefs still need to make some moves in free agency, but the biggest is to sign a veteran backup quarterback. Having someone like Teddy Bridgewater (who went to the Jets) or DeShone Kizer (who was traded to Green Bay) might have seemed cool, but they’re both young guys too. Patrick Mahomes needs a vet backing him up.

Chiefs get younger on defense, seek more aggression [Sam McDowell, The Kansas City Star]
It’s already been an exciting free agency session for Chiefs Kingdom, but many feel like the team isn’t done adding big names just yet. They’ve even kept some staples, including Anthony Sherman and Dustin Colquitt.
Both Sherman and Colquitt could have been easy options to cut, but they’re big pieces for this Chiefs team. Colquitt will now likely retire a Chief and Sherman, despite fullback being a dying position, is a tremendous contributor on special teams.
The Kansas City Chiefs have to be in the works to sign their next backup quarterback. Chad Henne or Matt Moore (as Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict wrote about above) would be a fine option, as they’re experienced vets and know their role. I want a guy like that sitting behind Mahomes, not a youngster like Bridgewater or Kizer.
Free agency has moved incredibly fast so far (unlike Major League Baseball), but there’s still moves to be made for the Kansas City Chiefs. What will the next one be?
