Free agency for the 2018 season begins this week and that’s what’s sweeping Kansas City Chiefs news at the moment.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been a part of two of the biggest trades this offseason and those trades will become official this week. That means both Alex Smith and Marcus Peters will no longer be members of the Chiefs. Smith will officially be a Washington Redskin and Peters will officially be a Los Angeles Ram.

With those two men out of town, the Chiefs should be able to make a decent sized splash in free agency. They need to address several positions, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do during this time.

Backup quarterback is certainly an area of concern, as Patrick Mahomes is the only signal caller on the roster right now. While I wouldn’t have considered wide receiver to be a big signing, the Chiefs have been linked to some names in that position. Signing a backup tight end might be a smart idea too.

As for defense, the Chiefs need a lot of help. They could sign just about any position defensively and Chiefs fans would probably nod their heads and say “Makes sense”.

"Wilkerson is not a perfect player though as he comes with some off the field baggage. He’s been involved in multiple fights with opponents and ran a foul of the coaching Jets coaching staff."

Danny Amendola linked to Chiefs [KC Kingdom]

"If the Chiefs are going to sign a wide receiver this offseason, Amendola could make a lot of sense for them. They don’t necessarily need a number one option, as Tyreek Hill showed he could be that guy last season."

More from Kansas City Chiefs

"Wilkerson’s best playing days are likely behind him given that he’ll be 29-years-old this coming season, but he likely still has a few more years of solid production in him, especially if he’s motivated on the field to prove his doubters wrong after he was cut loose by the Jets."

We’re getting to the most exciting part of the NFL offseason and it starts with free agency. It’ll be exciting to see what names the Chiefs bring on and if they really can make fans believe in that defense heading into 2018.

While the Chiefs haven’t been big players in free agency recently, a lot of that was due to being stuck in “cap hell”, as the kids call it these days. Trading Smith freed up a lot of that cap space and getting rid of guys like Derrick Johnson and Ron Parker helped as well.

The only problem now is replacing those guys and those positions. We should have a busy week filled with Kansas City Chiefs news this week and I can’t wait to dive into all of it.
