The Kansas City Chiefs can’t officially begin signing free agents until next week, but wide receiver Danny Amendola has been linked to them already.

When looking at the offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs, one might have thought that adding defensive talent would be the game plan. Instead, it looks like the Chiefs will be in the market for at least one receiver to add alongside Tyreek Hill.

One of the more recent names linked to Kansas City is Danny Amendola, who has spent the last five years of his career with the New England Patriots. Before that, Amendola was on the other side of Missouri as a member of the St. Louis Rams where he spent four seasons.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated was the first to link the Chiefs to Amendola. Breer said,

"Slot receivers are tough to value. Aging slot receivers have a tough time getting paid. But my sense is that Danny Amendola’s going into a pretty decent market. I’d keep an eye on Kansas City, a team that can compete now and could use another security blanket for its new starter, and Amendola’s fellow ex-Texas Tech Red Raider, Patrick Mahomes."

If the Chiefs are going to sign a wide receiver this offseason, Amendola could make a lot of sense for them. They don’t necessarily need a number one option (though I’m not going to be upset at any Sammy Watkins to Kansas City rumors that emerge in the coming days), as Tyreek Hill showed he could be that guy last season.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

Last season, Amendola started eight games (appearing in 15) and hauled in 61 receptions for 659 yards and two touchdowns. He absolutely trounced the Chiefs in week one, catching six passes for 100 yards.

What worries me about Amendola is that he’s injury prone. He’s played in all 16 games just twice in his career and the most starts he’s had is eight. Another thing worth noting is that Amendola has never reached 700 receiving yards with 689 being his career high (he did that in 2010 with the Rams).

Sure, as a number two option, Amendola wouldn’t be as vital in the offense as Hill, but signing a player who has had injury problems and less than 700 yards as his career high just doesn’t scream “AWESOME!” to me.

What this could signify, however, is that the Chiefs don’t see much of a future for Chris Conley past 2018 and it also probably means they’re not planning on retaining Albert Wilson. I’m all for giving Patrick Mahomes some weapons, but if you’re going to add a receiver, why not go for broke and ink Sammy Watkins to a contract instead?

A new weapon is great and should be helpful for Mahomes’ production as his first year as a starter, but is Danny Amendola someone who can be relied upon each week? Would you want the KC Chiefs to sign Amendola to a contract?
