Kansas City Royals news revolves around the team re-signing Mike Moustakas and inking Jon Jay to a deal earlier in the week.

It appeared that the 2018 season would be a rebuilding year for the Kansas City Royals, but the team has made some puzzling moves to say the least. After Eric Hosmer signed elsewhere, the Royals signed Lucas Duda to a one-year deal.

That was confusing enough, but now the Royals have added both Mike Moustakas and  Jon Jay, both to one-year deals. Moose signed on Thursday night after rejecting the qualifying offer earlier in the offseason. That has to sting.

Jon Jay was a surprising signing too, but he has had a nice career. He batted .296 last season with the Cubs and will likely be the Royals’ lead off man and starting center fielder.

Obviously the Jay news was big when it hit, but Moustakas re-signing is the talk of the town now. Not many of us expected him to return to Kansas City, but here we are. He’ll be with the Royals for one year for $6.5 million.

Here’s what’s trending in Kansas City Royals news throughout FanSided.

Royals Rumors: Mike Moustakas signs deal with Royals [KC Kingdom]

"It has to be a little frustrating for Moustakas, who rejected the qualifying offer from the Kansas City Royals when it was extended to him earlier in the offseason. He’s now signing a deal less than what that qualifying offer was worth."

"For the sake of the rebuild, I hope the Royals stay away from re-signing Moustakas. I like the guy and appreciate what he did for the organization, but if we’re going to rebuild, then let’s just rebuild."

Kansas City Royals make another confusing move by signing Jon Jay [KC Kingdom]

"Jon Jay is a good player, I’m not knocking him for his talent at all. The guy hit .296 with the Cubs last year, but my question is why are the Royals bringing in these types of players if it’s a rebuilding year?"

KC Royals fans love Mike Moustakas, but it’s okay to be confused by this move. The plan moving forward was to have Cuthbert at third base, so why is Moustakas being retained after all? There are plenty of options at designated hitter too, so the need for Moose really isn’t there.

Signing Jon Jay is a strange move to me as well, but the Royals now have their lead off man and a speedster on the base paths. Jay spent most of his career with the Cardinals, but has also played with the Padres and the Cubs.

The 2018 season was once thought to be a rebuild, but who knows what it’s going to look like now? I’ll trust the process and see what Dayton Moore has up his sleeves, but I’m certainly perplexed by the recent additions to the squad.
