The KC Chiefs have their quarterback of the future, but a former prominent team in the AFC West does not. The reports of Denver potentially bringing on Case Keenum is great for Chiefs fans.

When looking ahead to free agency, the biggest name on this year’s market was former Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. Had the Kansas City Chiefs been in the market for a quarterback, one would have to think they’d have been strong contenders to sign him.

Unfortunately for Chiefs fans, a team they HATE was linked to Cousins a lot and that was the Denver Broncos. Recent reports, however, have Cousins leaning towards signing with the Vikings, and that would leave Denver on the outside looking in when it comes to the top quarterback in free agency.

One of the next best options is honestly not a great option, but luckily the Broncos are taking the bait. That next option is Case Keenum. Yes, the same Case Keenum that has had a whopping one good NFL season and is 30 years old.

Keenum has spent time with three different teams during his seven-year NFL career and until last season with Minnesota, really was nothing more than a backup. Even during his 2017 run with the Vikings, he was still a backup, but was forced into play when Sam Bradford went down early on.

The Vikings rolled to a number two seed in the NFC playoffs and made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where they got dismantled by the eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles.

The Keenum we saw in that championship game is the Keenum we’re all used to watching. The multiple interceptions Keenum is the one that we watched in Houston and with the Rams for a total of six years. That’s the guy Denver is interested in and Chiefs fans should be excited about that.

The fact that Keenum had such a great season in Minnesota and is still not who they want as their quarterback shows a lot. He’s 30 years old, has just one good season under his belt, and is a career back up. So, yes, Broncos, please sign Case Keenum as your long-term quarterback. Chiefs fans would LOVE that.

Had Cousins chosen Denver (and he still very well could, nothing is set in stone quite yet), the Broncos definitely would have been a contender to win the AFC West in 2018. Their defense isn’t what it used to be though and while Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are decent weapons, they’re both getting older.

Cousins wanting to go to Minnesota makes perfect sense. Their defense was electric last year and he’d have Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen as his two main receiving threats. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me.

The best case scenario for Chiefs fans is for the Broncos to sign Case Keenum and maybe skip out on drafting a quarterback in the first round. I doubt that last part happens, but there’s no guarantee that whoever Denver drafts will pan out (just look at John Elway’s track record with drafting quarterbacks).

It’s nice for the KC Chiefs to have their quarterback of the future set, and if the Denver Broncos miss out on Kirk Cousins, that’s even sweeter.
