Kansas City Chiefs: Teddy Bridgewater makes little sense for the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have been linked to quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. This is a very strange piece of news to me.

Less than four years after being a late first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Teddy Bridgewater is expected to hit free agency. The Kansas City Chiefs are being grouped in as a team that might be interested in signing the former Louisville signal caller.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com was one of the people who got this story buzzing in Kansas City. Jeremiah said on the “Move the Sticks” podcast,

"Teddy Bridgewater goes under Andy Reid, gets himself healthy, probably ends up balling out in the preseason and they end up spinning him off for a pick."

The second part of the statement would be fine if that were to happen, but let’s pretend the Chiefs sign Bridgewater and keep him for the duration of the 2018 season. Let’s pretend he’s the backup to Patrick Mahomes, who the Chiefs just drafted a year ago and are throwing to the wolves this season.

I’m really not about this signing and it’s not because I don’t think Bridgewater is any good. I think the kid is talented and could be a starter somewhere. That would not be his role in Kansas City, so why bring him here?

Bridgewater suffered a gruesome injury two summers ago and that could be why teams don’t feel comfortable gambling on him as their next starting quarterback. The former first round pick hasn’t thrown more than 14 touchdowns in a season, but he’s only 25 years old and still has time to prove he was worthy of a first round pick.

More from Chiefs Free Agency

We all know what would happen if the Chiefs brought Bridgewater in. If Patrick Mahomes were to struggle after two or three weeks, fans would be clamoring to put Bridgewater in, and that’s just not something that sounds fun to me.

Bringing in a veteran like Chase Daniel is a better scenario because:

  1. He knows the offense
  2. As rude as this is to say, he “knows his role” and it’d be as a backup
  3. Fans wouldn’t be pushing for Daniel to start and you know it

Also, let’s not ignore the obvious here… Bridgewater has been injury prone. If the Chiefs signed him and both Mahomes and Bridgewater go down with an injury, who’s next in line? Daniel hasn’t shown a lot of injury history (though to be fair, he hasn’t played much) and even someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick has shown he can stay healthy.

If the Kansas City Chiefs do decide to sign Teddy Bridgewater, then that’s fine, but it’s just not a move that I feel makes a lot of sense for them at the moment. Address the defense first and then we’ll talk.
