Kansas City Royals News: Eric Hosmer and beginning of spring training
Kansas City Royals news obviously revolves around Eric Hosmer departing for San Diego. Hey, at least spring training is just around the corner!
It took until mid February, but Eric Hosmer finally made a decision about his future in Major League Baseball. Unfortunately, it does not revolve around the Kansas City Royals.
Hosmer inked an eight-year deal worth $144 million with the San Diego Padres, and Royals fans are kind of up in the air about it. Some are happy for Hosmer and will root for him no matter what. Others feel like he never really cared to come back to Kansas City and “did the Royals dirty”.
Whatever your opinion is, I think most of us can agree that there was no way the Royals were shelling out an eight-year deal to Eric Hosmer. The reports out there are that the team offered him a franchise-record five-year deal worth $100 million.
The deal would have been backloaded, as opposed to front loaded, which is what the Padres did. Hosmer can opt out after the first five years of his San Diego deal, but those three extra years is obviously what made him pick the Padres. Can you blame him?
Fortunately, spring training is on the horizon and Royals fans are ready to see what they have with some of these younger players.

Kansas City Royals: Thank you for everything Eric Hosmer [KC Kingdom]

With all of the free agents still on the market a week ago, it was tough to really focus on spring training because we didn’t know what the team was going to look like. Now that Eric Hosmer is gone, Royals fans know what to expect: It’s a rebuilding year and that means patience is key.
The 2018 season isn’t going to be tons of fun, but hopefully these rough seasons will be worth it. It shouldn’t be another 25+ years of irrelevancy for this organization.
What Royals fans should be grateful for is that they won a World Series not long ago and choosing to rebuild now will put them in a decent position to contend for another one again within the decade. No one said it’d be easy, but it should end up being worth it in the future.
As for not retaining Hosmer, it was the right decision. The Royals can’t afford to give out huge deals like that and the Padres definitely appeared to want him more. It’s time for fans to move on and wish the best for Hoz.
The “Forever Royal” era is over, so let’s move forward and be happy for whatever success comes next.
