The Kansas City Chiefs added David Amerson to their cornerback depth chart and while it might not have been the flashiest move, it was one that made a lot of sense.

Cornerback play is huge in the National Football League and the Kansas City Chiefs experienced that the hard way last year. Sure, Marcus Peters was fantastic, but on the other side, there were struggles to be had.

The second cornerback spot was such a rough patch for the Chiefs in 2017 that they went out and signed Darrelle Revis in the second half of the year. Revis was okay, but the team decided not to keep him for the second year of his deal, which was the right decision.

During the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have made it a strong point to add cornerback depth, and David Amerson is the second example of that. The first was a few weeks ago when the Alex Smith trade took place and the Chiefs got a third round pick and Kendall Fuller in return.

Fuller was a great corner in D.C. and will provide a legitimate second cornerback option across from Peters in the future. Amerson won’t be a starter, but depth is HUGE at cornerback and the Chiefs learned that last year.

Amerson is yet another former Redskins cornerback, who was drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He landed with the Raiders in 2015 and was released this offseason.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

During his career, Amerson has recorded 218 tackles, 64 defended passes, and eight interceptions during his career. He had a pick six off of Alex Smith back in the 2015 season.

People can be disappointed with the lack of production Amerson had last year, but as Terez Paylor pointed out in the tweet above, he’s a cheap option and will be motivated to prove himself this season. He’s also been pretty good at picking off the football though he didn’t have any interceptions a season ago.

Brett Veach knows the Kansas City Chiefs have to get better in the secondary and he’s already making strides to do so. Fuller was the first acquisition and now Amerson is just another depth piece to throw in there.

He hasn’t been at it for all that long, but Veach is making moves that make sense. Will David Amerson turn out to be anything great? It’s hard to say right now, but hopefully this ends up being a good free agent signing for the KC Chiefs.
