Kansas City Chiefs: Cutting Justin Houston not a realistic scenario

Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker Justin Houston was number one on USA Today’s list of NFL stars who could be cut this offseason. Yeah, that’s not going to happen.

Steven Ruiz of USA Today wrote a piece that was published on Monday noting 25 NFL stars who could be cut from their teams during the offseason. Number one on that list was the Kansas City Chiefs‘ own Justin Houston, who has been with the team since 2011.

Here is what Ruiz said on why he thinks Houston should be cut,

"Houston has struggled to stay on the field and his production has slipped as a result. With the Chiefs looking to get younger on defense, Houston will have a hard time sticking around. He can still be a Pro Bowl level player if he can stay healthy."

When I initially saw this list, I assumed a few Chiefs would be on it, but would never have guessed Houston would be appearing on it, let alone at number one. At first, I thought, “Hmm… You know, Houston hasn’t been all that good lately”, but then when sitting down and actually thinking about it, cutting him makes zero sense.

In the NFL, there are some positions that are far more important than others, and Justin Houston fills one of those positions. That’s the pass rushing aspect, something that the Chiefs lacked tremendously last year. Why would they give up someone who fills that need?

Not having a reliable pass rusher on the other side of Houston has really hurt his production, especially last year. Well, that and the fact that Bob Sutton continuously had Houston drop back into coverage for whatever reason.

It’s true that Justin Houston hasn’t been the same type of player he was back in 2014, but nearly all of that can be pinned on injuries. He hasn’t played in all 16 games since that stellar season (though he would have in 2017 had the Chiefs not opted to bench their starters in the final week), which is certainly what has made that contract look ugly.

Even though the contract is brutal now (thanks John Dorsey), the Chiefs really wouldn’t be any better off without Houston. They’d have $12,700,000 worth of dead money and would only save $7.9 million in the process, according to Over the Cap. Not only that, but they’d have no legitimate pass rusher heading into the 2018 season.

While Justin Houston hasn’t been the player we saw in 2014, he still has shown flashes of being able to get back to that. Once the Chiefs provide him with some help on the other side, that will free things up for Houston to be that wrecking ball on defense once again.

What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Is Justin Houston “in danger” of being cut this offseason?
