The Alex Smith era is officially over for the Kansas City Chiefs. The quarterback of the last five years has been traded to the Washington Redskins. Terez Paylor of The Kansas City Star tweeted out the news.

Wow! After months of speculating where Alex Smith would play next season, the answer is in Washington with the Redskins, as the Kansas City Chiefs sent their quarterback to D.C.

This is pretty shocking news for many reasons. For one, we all expected to be sitting on this story for several more weeks. That’s normally how it works, but obviously the Redskins are looking to move on from Kirk Cousins and the Chiefs were willing to take any respectable deal.

The good news with this trade is that Smith isn’t going to a complete joke of a team (like the Browns per say) and the Redskins have some talent. He only has one year left on his deal, but the Redskins might decide to work on a new deal for Smith (UPDATE: Smith has indeed received an extension from Washington, per Ian Rapoport).

This is also shocking because Washington really wasn’t grouped with the main contenders for Smith’s services. Those teams were the likes of Buffalo, Jacksonville, and yes… Cleveland. All teams who need quarterbacks and two of whom were competitive and made the playoffs a season ago.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Smith will head to Washington and the Patrick Mahomes era will officially begin for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs, as reported in the tweet above by Ian Rapoport, will receive a player yet to be named and a pick in exchange for Smith, so now we will sit back and wait on the news as to what round the pick will be in.

The Chiefs need to stock pile some picks this offseason, but what is Smith worth to the Redskins? Can they get a second or a third rounder for the quarterback? That’s the hope, but time will tell there.

This is a huge trade and it’s crazy how quickly it ended up taking place. The Super Bowl hasn’t even been played yet and the Chiefs have already traded their quarterback to a new team. Good for both sides for getting a deal done.

Of course, this means that Kirk Cousins will be a free agent now and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him sign with Denver. The Browns could still be in play for Cousins, as could the Jaguars and Bills. Honestly, Cousins doesn’t scare me, but I’d love to see the Broncos have more than just two seasons of bad quarterback play.

What do you think of this deal, Chiefs fans? Do you think Washington is a good fit for Alex Smith?
