The Kansas City Chiefs are heading into the Patrick Mahomes era, but Alex Smith is still on the roster. The Cleveland Browns actually would make a lot of sense as a landing spot for Smith.

While the Browns are the laughing stock of the NFL (one win in the last two seasons will easily earn you that title), that might not be the case in the next few years. Yes, the Browns are a long way away from being any type of contender, but they’re making strides to improve.

They hired former Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey as their new GM and recently brought in former Chiefs head coach Todd Haley as their offensive coordinator. Both of those guys have a lot of experience in the league and should be able to get the Browns to a more competitive level.

The Dorsey connection is why a lot of people will predict Alex Smith to eventually wind up in Cleveland. One of Dorsey’s first moves as the GM in Kansas City was trading for Smith back in 2013. Peter King of Sports Illustrated was the first to get those rumors started.

King had a Q&A on Twitter this past Monday and someone asked him who would be the Browns starting quarterback on opening day of the NFL. He responded with a familiar name to Kansas City Chiefs fans,

I used to think that trading Smith to Cleveland would be a bit of a “D” move, but it’s beginning to make more and more sense as a landing spot for the Chiefs quarterback. The Browns have won one game over the past two seasons and it just isn’t somewhere that many players want to play due to the lack of success.

With the hiring of John Dorsey and the slew of draft picks Cleveland has acquired over the years, the Browns might finally be in a position to rebuild the right way. Dorsey showcased his ability to find talent through the draft and though free agency while in Kansas City, so just imagine what kind of players he’ll be able to get with all of Cleveland’s picks.

The Browns have the first overall pick and the fourth overall pick. While many think they will take a quarterback with one of those two picks, getting Smith in free agency could shore them up to go with the best available players. Perhaps Saquon Barkley could be in play for one of those picks and that’s a guy who could really take over their offense in years to come.

If the Browns do still grab a quarterback in the top four, however, Smith is the perfect guy to have mentor that young signal caller. He’d be able to bring a (semi)winning culture to Cleveland and that’s something that franchise will gladly take, even if it’s just six wins a season.

Out of all of the teams Smith could end up with, the Browns wouldn’t be all that threatening to the Chiefs (though they do play next season) and he’d have the opportunity to really turn that team around. It’s probably not high on Smith’s wish list, but John Dorsey being there definitely makes it a little more desirable.

We don’t know what will happen with Alex Smith or where he’ll wind up, but if it’s with Cleveland, Smith has a chance to become one of the best quarterbacks that franchise has seen in a really long time.
