The Kansas City Chiefs will watch Super Bowl LII from home, but it is definitely worth noting that they defeated both of the teams partaking in the big game this year.

After an early exit from the playoffs once again, Kansas City Chiefs fans watched this past weekend as the New England Patriots won the AFC Championship Game to make it to their eighth Super Bowl under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. The Patriots edged out the Jacksonville Jaguars in what was a much closer game than many expected.

The Chiefs beat the Patriots in the season opener in Foxboro and it was a game where some people questioned if this would finally be a different top dog in the AFC. We soon found out that wasn’t the case though, as the Pats are headed back to the Super Bowl and the Chiefs were one and done in the postseason yet again.

The other team headed to Minneapolis will be the Philadelphia Eagles, who the Chiefs also took down earlier in the season. The Chiefs actually beat these two teams in the first two weeks of the season and Kansas City faced a tough Eagles team that still had Carson Wentz under center.

Both wins were impressive for the KC Chiefs, who began the year at 2-0 after knocking both of these eventual conference champions off, but at the end of the day, did it really matter all that much? No, not really.

Kansas City also beat both the Patriots and Seahawks in the 2014 season when both went on to the Super Bowl. It’s just something to pat yourself on the back for and then silently cry that your team isn’t still playing in the final game of the season.

It’d be nice to see a different team make it in the AFC, but for that to happen, a new regime is going to have to rise up and beat the Patriots when it comes down to it. The Chiefs looked like they could be that team early on in the season, but their midseason implosion dropped them all the way to the four seed in the playoffs.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

As for the Eagles, we all know what Chiefs fans will be talking about and it’s the fact that Doug Pederson used to be the offensive coordinator in Kansas City. In just his second season as the Eagles head coach, Pederson has already gotten his team to the promise land.

Man, if Philly wins the Super Bowl, a lot of Chiefs fans are going to be furious, even though keeping Pederson over Andy Reid wasn’t an option at the time. He’s done a good job keeping this Eagles team motivated after Wentz went down and it’s hard to really knock on Pederson’s coaching this season.

Nick Foles is also someone who used to be in Kansas City, but he was the backup for the Chiefs in 2016 and started just one game. He took over for Wentz and has played quite well this postseason.

More than likely, the Patriots will win yet another Super Bowl, but Chiefs fans can at least say they beat both of the conference champions. There’s no trophy for that, but it shows this team can beat some big dogs. Now they have to do it in the games where it really matters.

When that finally starts to happen, perhaps the Kansas City Chiefs can punch their ticket to the Super Bowl. We’ve all been waiting our whole lives for that moment.
