It’s been a very quiet offseason, not just for the Kansas City Royals, but for all of Major League Baseball as well. The Royals should make a low-key signing by bringing back relief pitcher Peter Moylan.

The 2018 season will likely be a rebuilding one for the Kansas City Royals and that’s something the fan base has come to terms with. The Royals don’t have the dough to sign all of their big name free agents, but they do have the money to keep a few of the low key names. One such guy is Peter Moylan, who is still unsigned at the moment.

Moylan has spent the last two seasons in Kansas City (both on one-year deals) and proved he deserved a third contract from the organization. He had a decent year for the Royals out of the bullpen, appearing in 79 games and throwing in 59.1 innings.

During that time, Moylan had an ERA of 3.49 and struck out 46 batters. Moylan was the type of pitcher who’d normally come in just to get one batter out, but he was pretty good at it. He did issue 25 walks, which is obviously a sore spot on the stat sheet, but with the way Moylan pitches, walks are going to be a more common occurrence.

More from Kansas City Royals

The Royals are probably still trying to see what happens with Eric Hosmer, but in the mean time, Moylan is a great option to bring back. He’s familiar with the team and would be a cheap contract for a veteran player. Plus, he’s made it known that he wants to return to Kansas City in 2018.

Moylan is 39 years old, which is likely why he’s still unsigned, but the age is something the team can look past, simply because they need bullpen arms. The Royals traded Scott Alexander to the Dodgers and Joakim Soria to the White Sox a few weeks ago and the bullpen is looking a little more bare now.

The Royals waited until spring training to re-sign Moylan last year, so that could be what we’re looking at again in 2018. The Australian native has become a popular player during his two years in Kansas City because of his unique pitching delivery and that cool accent of his.

Peter Moylan has been a reliable pitcher out of the bullpen for Kansas City since joining them in 2016 and while this signing wouldn’t be the talk of the town, it’d be a good move to make. The bullpen, as of now, still has Kelvin Herrera, Brandon Maurer, and Ryan Buchter, all of whom have potential. Buchter showed that potential last year and Herrera and Maurer are due for bounce back seasons.

It’s understandable that the Royals want to cut costs at all corners, but Moylan is a cheap option and would do his job in the bullpen. That’s reason enough to re-sign him.
