Kansas City Chiefs: Way Too Early 2018 NFL Mock Draft
ROUND 6: PICK 22 (200TH OVERALL) – ANDREW BROWN, EDGE (VIRGINIA)
Four picks in and the KC Chiefs add yet another defensive player to their ranks. This time, it’s Andrew Brown out of Virginia. The Chiefs desperately need to address their defensive woes from a season ago and they’ll continue to set that standard choosing their fourth consecutive defensive player.
Brown spent all four years at Virginia and put up solid stats during his college career. He recorded 94 tackles (26.5 for loss) and ten and a half sacks during that time. Brown had 46 tackles and three and a half sacks as a senior in 2017.
While some might think taking three linebackers with the first four picks is a little ridiculous, did you see how poor the Chiefs pass rush looked last season?
The big thing to watch for with Brown is his motivation on the field, which Charlie Campbell of Walter Football says many analysts question.
"Some team sources say they have some concerns about motivational issues with Brown. They think he has excellent athletic traits, but also have compared him to Ole Miss’ Robert Nkemdiche in terms of motivational concerns and the skill set being potentially more tantalizing than the consistency of his play on the field."
This is a little concerning to read about, but similar to Baker with the first pick, there’s no other coach you want for these type of players than Andy Reid. Reid knows how to work with these guys and coach them up.
While some might think taking three linebackers with the first four picks is a little ridiculous, did you see how poor the Chiefs pass rush looked last season? Dee Ford was non-existent throughout the last half of the season, Justin Houston was used improperly (despite being healthy for the first time in forever), and there was little pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Bringing in someone like Andrew Brown doesn’t mean he’ll get right on the field, but it will give the Chiefs much needed options within their pass rush. Getting after the quarterback is what the KC Chiefs used to do best and it’s time to get back to that.
