Kansas City Chiefs: Free Agency Preview

Offense: Quarterbacks

When talking about the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback position, the conversation centers around Patrick Mahomes. However, the Chiefs are likely to trade away Alex Smith, and probably won’t re-sign Tyler Bray. That leaves Mahomes as the only quarterback projected to be on the 2018 roster. They  should target at least one veteran as a backup.

  1. Chase Daniel – QB – Saints: This is the move that makes the most sense for the Chiefs. Daniel knows the Chiefs offense and many of the players on the roster. He would provide a decent backup, while also being someone Patrick Mahomes can get advice from.
  2. Ryan Fitzpatrick – QB – Buccaneers: Nobody expects Fitzpatrick to come in and be a game-changer. However, he is a veteran backup quarterback who has been all over the league. He has the experience to step in and start if needed, or to sit on the sidelines and help Mahomes out.
  3. Kevin Hogan – QB – Browns: He doesn’t have the veteran credentials I’d like, but Hogan has been a part of the Chiefs offense before. He’s also started some NFL games. Hogan is also young and cheap. When you add it all up, this move could really make a lot of sense.

Ultimately the Chiefs should be looking to add to the quarterback position with a veteran and a youngster.  You can really make sound arguments either way on whether or not KC should pay a little more for a top veteran quarterback. This is a position that we don’t want to overlook though, that’s for sure.
