The 2017 season is over for the Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Albert Wilson is officially a free agent this offseason.

The Kansas City Chiefs need to do their best to keep Albert Wilson in a Chiefs uniform next season and beyond. He had his best season as a Chief in 2017, hauling in 42 passes for 554 yards and three touchdowns.

While that doesn’t sound like much, it was Wilson’s best year as a pro and he’s improved significantly over his four-year career. The biggest reason to keep Wilson in Kansas City is that he clearly has a good connection with Patrick Mahomes, as we saw in the Denver game last week.

In that game, Wilson caught ten passes for 147 yards and definitely showed the rest of the league that he’s capable of being a great receiver. That game was Mahomes’ first start and while he didn’t have Tyreek Hill or Travis Kelce to throw to, Wilson was there for the rookie quarterback and the two established a big time connection against the Broncos.

It’s almost a foregone conclusion now after Saturday’s playoff loss that Alex Smith will be gone next season, so it’s time to get weapons for Mahomes. If the Texas Tech product felt comfortable throwing to Wilson, it’s definitely in Kansas City’s best interest to keep Wilson in KC.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Wilson appeared in 13 games in 2017, starting seven, and fans definitely missed him whenever he missed games due to injury. He was open and provided big plays for the offense on most occasions.

Yes, he had that dropped pass against the Dolphins, but he also had his fair share of ridiculous grabs as well (the Raiders one for instance, where he juggled it and then ran into the end zone). He’s a guy who can usually make a play when needed to.

Chiefs fans would have laughed at the idea of keeping Albert Wilson before this season and at times, many wondered why he was still on the roster, but we saw why this year. Wilson is a good receiver and if the Kansas City Chiefs can keep him for a reasonable amount of money, I say do it.

That Denver game might have put Wilson on the radar enough that other teams could be willing to shell out a huge chunk of change to him. Wilson seems to enjoy playing in Kansas City, so hopefully he’s wanting to remain a Chief, but you never know. It would be nice to have him here for Mahomes next season though.
