Kansas City Chiefs fans are split on who could replace Matt Nagy
By Ben Almquist
The NFL coaching carousel is in full effect, and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is a popular name. Replacing him won’t be an easy task for KC.
It’s all about the NFL playoffs right now for the Kansas City Chiefs. Except for that small part in the back of everyone’s mind thinking about the NFL coaching carousel. Dave Toub and Matt Nagy are two of the more popular coaching candidates in the NFL this year. Nagy is especially intriguing as a young offensive coordinator. He would also be very tough to replace.
For his own part, Matt Nagy has already addressed the issue. Nagy has already received a pair of interview requests from the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts. However, he says that this isn’t affecting the way he approaches getting ready for this weekend’s game. That has to be a tough thing to push out of his mind. It certainly is for the fans.
KC Kingdom took to Twitter earlier this week to get some feedback from the fan base on what the Chiefs should do if Matt Nagy were hired away. Kansas City would be on their third offensive coordinator in just three years. That’s tough on the stability of the offense, so a good hire would be especially important.
There Are Some Good Options
The cupboard is not bare for the Kansas City Chiefs at offensive coordinator. The most notable name on the coaching staff (and the winner of our poll) is Brad Childress. He’s been with KC since 2013, helping Andy Reid come up with play concepts. In terms of continuity, Childress definitely makes the most sense.
Eric Bienemy is also an intriguing candidate. The former NFL running back is highly-regarded for his work with star players like Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, and now Kareem Hunt. Does he have the acumen for a coordinator position? That’s tough to know, but he has been in the Chiefs system for a while now.

Of course, Andy Reid could also look outside the organization for a new offensive coordinator. Reid has an extensive coaching tree that includes a ton of well-respected coaches. It would not be all that surprising if he were to bring one of them in to take over.
Hoping He Stays In Kansas City
Ultimately, the best thing for the Kansas City Chiefs would be if Matt Nagy doesn’t get a head coaching job this time around. Even though this is Andy Reid’s offense, the coordinator position is still important. The Chiefs don’t want to be going on their third coordinator in three years.

Some consistency is especially important with Patrick Mahomes likely taking over in 2018. The NFL has had a number of quarterbacks fail because they didn’t have any consistency in scheme and coaching. Most notably, Alex Smith struggled for years in San Francisco because of that very reason.
However, with the recent success of young offensive coordinators moving into head coaching jobs, it is very likely that Matt Nagy gets a job. That is definitely a tough loss for the Chiefs, especially after the job Nagy did here at the end of the season. This is just a part of the game though. Replacing talent doesn’t just mean on the roster.
If the Kansas City Chiefs do lose Matt Nagy to a head coaching opportunity, it will be a tough blow. The Chiefs certainly have options for replacing Nagy, but that doesn’t really make it any easier. Even if this isn’t the year for the young offensive coordinator, this is a move that will certainly be coming in the next couple of years.
