Royals Rumors: Royals trade Scott Alexander and Joakim Soria
Royals rumors are picking up steam and the latest is a three-team deal that will send Royals reliever Scott Alexander and Joakim Soria to other teams.
News picks up fast, especially Royals rumors and especially hot stove talk in general! The latest rumor to hit the news cycle is that the Kansas City Royals are a part of a three-team deal that will send Scott Alexander and Joakim Soria to the Dodgers and White Sox respectively.
The Royals will send Alexander to the Dodgers and Soria to the White Sox in exchange for Trevor Oaks and Erick Mejia, both from the Dodgers. This is a big trade for the Royals and shows that they’re still committed to rebuilding.
Alexander was one of the top Royals relievers, coming off a season in which he threw 69 innings, notched four saves, and posted an ERA of 2.48. The guy was one of the more reliable relievers in the KC bullpen last season and was at his highest value this offseason at the young age of 28. It makes perfect sense that the Royals traded him.
Joakim Soria, on the other hand, wasn’t as popular with Royals fans, at least not this go around. The team gave him a pretty steep contract after the 2015 season and he failed to deliver. He had a 4.05 ERA in 2016 and blew so many games that fans lost count of how many.
The 2017 season was a little kinder to Soria, which likely made him easier to trade. He only has one more year left on that original three-year deal and all jokes aside, is still a decent reliever to have, especially for a young team like the White Sox.

In return, the Royals will receive Trevor Oaks from the Dodgers. Oaks has yet to make it to the major leagues, but could very well be close to that mark. He looked decent in the minors for the Dodgers last year with an ERA of 3.83 in 91.2 innings thrown.
Oaks started 18 games in the minors, so if the Royals are looking for future starters, Oaks is certainly an option down the road. Seeing that the team traded two pivotal players from last year’s team, that likely means no one on the pitching staff is off the trade table.
The other player the Royals will be receiving is Erick Mejia, who is a minor league infielder from the Dodgers organization. He slashed .278/.344/.397 with three different teams last season. Mejia has experience at second base, third base, and shortstop and the Royals, which is definitely something worth noting.
Even with the Kansas City Royals still heavily pursuing Eric Hosmer, these are the types of trades that fans should get used to (okay, maybe not three-team trades, but you get what I’m saying). They sent two talented pitchers to other teams in exchange for prospects. This is what a rebuild consists of.
This might be the first of many Royals rumors to report. For now, welcome to the Royals organization, Trevor Oaks and Erick Mejia!
