KC Chiefs fans are excited for this Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos and for good reason. It’s Patrick Mahomes time in Kansas City!

With that said, however, it’s important that we as fans don’t look too much into this game, no matter what the final stats are. There are a lot of factors to take into account for this game and that’s definitely going to effect Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in their final game of the regular season.

While I think Mahomes will do a decent job, let’s say he completely flops in his first NFL start. Pretend Mahomes takes the field and performs as badly as Nathan Peterman did in his first NFL start for the Bills in the middle of the season (he threw five interceptions in case you forgot).

If that happens, don’t freak out. Patrick Mahomes has the odds stacked against him this week. He’s making his first NFL start on the road (not to mention in Denver, where it’s cold and the fans are mean) with backups surrounding him on the field, and against a really tough defense.

It’s important that we as fans don’t look too much into this game, no matter what the final stats are.

To throw any rookie into that kind of environment would be tough, let alone an organization like the Chiefs, whose fans LOVE to nag on their quarterbacks. If Mahomes does throw a few picks, fans need to understand that’s part of the learning process.

Mahomes is going to be the kind of quarterback who makes those mistakes a lot in his early years. He likes to sling the ball down the field, even when he shouldn’t on certain plays. That’s going to be a learning experience for the former Texas Tech product.

Now, let’s look at the other side. Say Patrick Mahomes absolutely lights up the Donkeys, throwing for over 300 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and maybe makes a couple of spectacular throws. Fans will definitely be on cloud nine, but that’s probably not a great idea either.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

The Broncos have literally nothing to play for this weekend. They’ve won five games this year, so winning a sixth game isn’t going to do anything for them.

I’m not necessarily saying that Denver won’t try this weekend, but come on… Would you go out there and put your body on the line just for one more win? If anything, it could hurt them because they’re in line for a top ten pick in the draft right now.

It’s okay for KC Chiefs fans to be excited about Patrick Mahomes making his first start, but all I’m suggesting here is that we don’t look too much into this first game. If the Chiefs win, cool, but they have nothing to play for this weekend. If they lose, same deal.

If Mahomes goes out there and throws for 300 yards, then great! If he throws for 100 yards and gets intercepted five times, that’d suck, but it’s just one game and all rookie quarterbacks usually suck in their first bit of NFL action.

Patrick Mahomes is the future of the Kansas City Chiefs organization, but we can’t let one game be the deciding factor in how his career is going to go. It’s one game and he still has a long way to go before becoming one of the best in the league.
