There is a clear fallout between the New York Giants and cornerback Eli Apple. The Kansas City Chiefs should make a move to add the young corner in 2018.

The smoke hasn’t even cleared yet, and I’m already envisioning the Kansas City Chiefs taking advantage of the situation in New York. In case you haven’t been following, Giants safety Landon Collins called 2016 first round pick Eli Apple a cancer. It is likely the final straw in a situation that has been rapidly deteriorating already. The Chiefs should be ready to strike.

Eli Apple’s young career in New York has been a wild one. Things got off on the wrong foot when Apple’s mother, Annie, called out the Giants for their handling of Josh Brown‘s domestic violence incident. However, the young corner was still able to find a place on the team and would start 11 games in his rookie season.

Unfortunately, things have not stabilized with time. A series of strange events have taken place this year that have driven a clear wedge between Eli Apple and the organization. For a long time now, it has looked like the team would likely try to move on this offseason. Now it’s just about as much a sure thing as you can find in the NFL.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events

I won’t blame Kansas City Chiefs fans for being skeptical of what I’m proposing here. Anytime you have a player with the kind of baggage that Eli Apple is currently carrying, at least some of it has to be true. However, I’m not putting all of it on him. The Giants organization has allowed a lot of locker room problems to fester recently.

As far as Eli Apple’s issues go, a lot of them seem to be rooted in a very tough off-the-field situation. Apple has had a falling out with much of his family, largely surrounding the separation of his mother and step-father. On top of that, Apple’s mother recently had to have brain surgery. That is quite a bit to put on the plate of a 22 year old.

In football matters, Eli Apple was called out in a film session by his coaches. That happened around the same time as his mother’s brain surgery. Apple has also struggled on the field this year, which doesn’t help matters as far as the fans and media go. Of course, the big issue has been his public feud with Landon Collins that resulted in the safety making some major public comments yesterday.

You can see why a separation between player and team is likely imminent.

Take Advantage Of Cheap Talent

New Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach showed some shrewdness this year when he snatched Reggie Ragland from the Bills. Veach got the Chiefs a starting linebacker and 2016 second round pick for a 2018 fourth round pick. It was a very smart and quick decision to take advantage of a situation that presented itself.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Brett Veach is now in a solid position to do that again. Kansas City has some big questions at cornerback facing them in 2018. Adding Eli Apple should at least help provide a decent depth option, and that’s just assuming he doesn’t live up to his potential. If Apple does put it together, he could be a very good starter opposite Marcus Peters.

Here is where I get real excited about this move though. Thanks to Landon Collins calling Eli Apple a cancer, the price tag in a trade will be minimal. We’re talking a conditional late round pick. No way can the Giants salvage this situation to get anything better. On top of that, Apple would only cost $4.3 million over the next two years.

That is the very definition of a low-risk, high-reward opportunity.

We have already seen the Kansas City Chiefs get aggressive in the trade market with Brett Veach as GM. Here is another opportunity for Veach to take advantage of a situation to make the Chiefs better. Eli Apple definitely comes with some baggage, but he also has plenty of talent. The right coach and locker room can get it out of him.
