There is a lot of talk from fans about the Kansas City Chiefs moving on from Bob Sutton after this season. If that happens, Giants interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo seems like a likely candidate to replace him.

We’ve come to the time of the season when a whirlwind of coaching and front office changes start to happen. For the most part, the Kansas City Chiefs should be pretty much clear of any big changes. However, there is a growing portion of the fan base that wants Bob Sutton gone. If that does happen, look for Steve Spagnuolo to be a top candidate.

Personally, I don’t believe that the problems on defense are on Bob Sutton. From what I can see, it’s the execution on the field that is off. However, this is a fan site, and I do have to consider what fans are talking about. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve tossed a few names around as far as potential defensive coordinators.

Steve Spagnuolo was not among any of those names that I was tossing around, because I didn’t think there was any way he’d be available. However, the Giants have mismanaged themselves into a complete regime change, and it’s hard to see “Spags” hanging around. He’s currently the interim head coach, and that usually doesn’t last long.

Can’t Ask For Much Better

There are very few coaches in the NFL with a better reputation as a defensive coach that Steve Spagnuolo. If the Kansas City Chiefs are looking for a change, I don’t know of many people who could reasonably argue against hiring him. At this point in his career, Spagnuolo is probably looking for some stability too.

That’s a big bonus for Kansas City who just extended Andy Reid’s contract. Reid and Steve Spagnuolo have a long history working together in Philadelphia. Spagnuolo was on the Eagles staff under Reid from 1999 to 2006. These guys definitely know each other very well. That should mean plenty of stability.

The other bonus here is that Steve Spagnuolo is experienced enough to run both a 3-4 and 4-3 defensive look. That gives the Chiefs some flexibility in how they decide to address some of the defensive deficiencies they are currently dealing with. Job security plus discretion in how he does his job will be some quality selling points if KC decides to make an offer.

Could The Chiefs Go To A 4-3?

You may have seen that I already touched the subject of the Kansas City Chiefs switching to the 4-3. To be honest, this is a move that I am starting to become more and more of a fan of. Should the Chiefs want to pursue that path, Steve Spagnuolo could be a great hire.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Steve Spagnuolo generally prefers a 4-3 defense, using a heavy blitz package to generate pressure. That’s something that could work very well for the talent that Kansas City has on the defensive side of the ball. Spagnuolo’s defense should especially make use of Justin Houston’s pass rushing talents. That’s something Chiefs fans would love.

This move would also bring a coach that is known for coaching with some passion. That’s another thing that the Kansas City defense could probably use moving forward. Bob Sutton has a great deal of skill at his craft, but “fiery” is not a term I’d use to describe him. The Chiefs defense can look listless at times, and getting a fire lit under them couldn’t hurt things.

You can expect to hear a lot of suggestions about how the Kansas City Chiefs can turn things around over the next few weeks. Until this team starts showing some life and winning games again, Chiefs fans are going to want some changes. Right now, Bob Sutton is pretty high up on that list.
