Kansas City Chiefs: Rapid Reaction vs New York Jets
By Ben Almquist
You can’t blame Alex Smith for the latest Kansas City Chiefs loss. The Kansas City defense got absolutely ripped to shreds this week as they lost to the Jets 31-38.
Over the past several weeks, there has been plenty of ire directed at Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith. However, he can’t be held to blame for this week’s loss as the Chiefs defense absolutely collapsed against the New York Jets. KC racked up their fourth loss in a row, this time falling 31-38.
The Kansas City offense showed up to play today, and were deadly efficient. Especially with their passing game. Alex Smith threw for 366 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding a 70 yard scramble. Yet somehow the defense just continued to manage to let the Jets do whatever they wanted.
The Jets were able to put up 490 yards of offense and 38 points on a hapless Chiefs defense. It’s tough to come up with just one area to put the blame on. The secondary was awful, the run defense ineffective, and the pass rush virtually non-existent. It may have been the single worst performance of the year.
Alex Smith Looked Good
Blame him all you want, but this game cannot possibly be put on the back of Alex Smith. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback was excellent today. He did everything possible to try and lead the Chiefs to a win, but just couldn’t get the defensive support needed.
The KC run game continued to be a non-factor this week. However, that was largely due to the fact that the Chiefs defense couldn’t get the Jets off the field. The entire game was put on the shoulders of Alex Smith, and for the most part, he lived up to the challenge.

However, we can expect the narrative to continue this week. There is a large portion of the fan base that wants Alex Smith benched, and this will do nothing to change that. Ultimately, you want the team to win and the Chiefs just aren’t doing that. Something will have to change.
How Do We Fix This?
The season is slipping away from the Kansas City Chiefs, and there are no signs of it stopping. The biggest concern has to be that you can’t pin the problems on any one area. When the defense plays well, the offense can’t do anything. When the offense is cruising, the defense might as well not show up. A solution has to be found.

To complicate the matter, the Chargers and Raiders are gaining in the division. Kansas City has squandered a huge lead in the division, and are now at the point they seem likely to miss the playoffs. With no sign of resurgence coming on the part of KC, it seems a foregone conclusion that this season is all but over.
Kansas City is likely headed into a rebuilding year in 2018, starting with a new quarterback. Patrick Mahomes is the future of this organization. The question is what kind of team he will be inheriting. Right now, it’s hard to say that the Chiefs should be listing anybody as “untouchable” this offseason.
Despite all the promise that the 2017 season began with for the Kansas City Chiefs, we have seen a disaster unfold before us. Nothing about this team seems in sync right now. The biggest concern has to be that we don’t even know what the biggest concern is. Brett Veach and Andy Reid will have their work cut out for them.
