Kansas basketball’s very own LaGerald Vick owns just about every attribute needed in order to succeed at a high level – just ask his number one fan.

An overjoyed mother living the dream as much as her son

“A big fish in little waters”

As a collegiate, or professional athlete, there tends to always be a “number-one fan” following the given success. In LaGerald Vick’s case, the biggest fan of them all is found directly in his immediate family.

Vick’s talents in the game of basketball started to shine long before he donned a Kansas basketball uniform –  It showed early on in his childhood. Talents that were recognized first by none other than his own mother – Lauressa “LaLa” Vick.

"“I knew LaGerald was special ever since birth, but I knew he was special at basketball in the 7th grade.”"

Vick did not stop the boasting about her son there, who of course deserves all of the boasting in the world.

"“By the time he (LaGerald) reached 8th grade he was a phenom. I (LaLa) always said that he was a big fish in little water because of the area of the school he attended.”"

LaLa uses this metaphor frequently to describe how much more dominant Vick was compared to who his competition.

"“I remember it like it was yesterday”"

In high school, Vick’s named started to become popular due to his success on the court. He started to gain division one offers quickly – offers in which he significantly deserved. Western Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Auburn, and Wichita State only make up a few of his many division one offers that he received.

More from Kansas Jayhawks

Vick originally selected to take his talents down into the state of Texas, with the Mustangs of Southern Methodist (SMU). But, this decision did not last long, as he decided to take his talents elsewhere.

After plenty of reconsideration, Vick decommitted from SMU. Following his decommitment, Vick proudly announced his to commitment to the University of Kansas.

LaLa remembers the day he committed to Kansas “like it was yesterday”. She quickly added

"“I was excited for LaGerald “Boomain” to leave Memphis so he could see the things and go the places that I couldn’t afford to send him. Everything I wanted for the KIDD is coming true at KU.”"

Vick showed glimpses of his true talents during his freshman season as a Jayhawk. His game early on made the basketball team, and of course, his mother thrilled for his future.

"“He’s the first grandchild to attend a University”"

LaLa’s love, and support for LaGerald goes far beyond his over achieving game of basketball. LaLa admires his drive and passion, and the fact he took his passion to a collegiate level.

"“Watching LaGerald not only attend a University, but play for Kansas is historical in our family. He (LaGerald) is the first grandchild in the family to attend a University, as well as, do what he was born and destined to do.”"

Doing what he is born and destined to do, is competing with a basketball in his hands. LaLa enjoys watching number two for the Crimson, and Blue play passionately, where his heart truly belongs.

"LaLa added “I am so excited he chose to play on a winning team because he has been a winner since birth.”"

LaLa – Jayhawk Nation loves you, as much as your son

No matter the game, or the circumstance, Vick is still playing his heart out, which makes him a player any coach in America would love to have on their team.

"“LaGerald is walking in his purpose, and working in his passion.”"

These words coming from a mother, who is proud of every step LaGerald has taken in his life, proves just the type of person LaLa truly is.

When a mother praises her son for “walking in his purpose”, and “working in his passion”, just know, LaLa’s heart of gold is being mirrored every dribble Vick takes.
