The Kansas City Chiefs made a move to shore up their secondary by signing cornerback Darrelle Revis. Hopefully he can make an impact for the defense.
This late in the 2017 season, it was highly unlikely that the Kansas City Chiefs would make a roster move of any significance. However, that certainly did not mean they wouldn’t try. The Chiefs have signed veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis in an effort to address the back end of the defense.
This is obviously a high-profile move for Kansas City. Even though Darrelle Revis is not the same elite level player he once was, this is a significant move. The Chiefs secondary has been missing a veteran at the cornerback position. They have that now with a guy who already knows Bob Sutton’s defense.
This is definitely a surprise. Many thought that Darrelle Revis would be officially hanging up his cleats soon. The fact that the Chiefs were able to get him on board is going to be something that all of the talking heads will address over the next few days. At the very least, it will be interesting to see him back on the field.
“Darrelle is a proven player in this league and we are excited to add him to our secondary,” Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach said. “He’s had a Hall of Fame career and his leadership and playing experience will be valuable to our defense.”

Just Stop The Bleeding
The big thing here is that the Kansas City Chiefs do not need Darrelle Revis to be a superstar. They just need him to be good enough to stop the bleeding. The Chiefs outside corners, opposite of Marcus Peters, have been getting picked on this year. That has caused a number of other issues to pop up as Bob Sutton tried to adjust to cover the weakness.
Darrelle Revis should be able to step in quickly too. He’s very familiar with the Chiefs defensive scheme, so there is no real learning curve here. Revis will likely be taking on the corner spot opposite of Marcus Peters, though he may also be utilized out of the slot if KC wants Steven Nelson on the outside.

If Darrelle Revis can hold up in a starting role for the rest of the year, it would allow the KC defense to get more aggressive up front. The Chiefs have been working hard to find a way to get the defense back on track this year. Hopefully this move will be the spark they need.
Future Moves?
This move should close the book on both Phillip Gaines and Kenneth Acker as Kansas City Chiefs after this year. Clearly neither player was able to step into a prominent role with the team. Terrance Mitchell may also have his future with the team in question as he is a free agent after this year.

A few weeks ago, Kansas City signed cornerback Will Redmond to the Practice Squad. He hasn’t been called up yet, but there is some hope that the former third round pick could also join the active roster this year. That would give the Chiefs a very different looking secondary than they started the season with.
In an interesting twist, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs have been trying to sign Darrelle Revis for some time now. However, he only just now agreed to terms. It will be interesting to see what details come out about that, as well as the contract he’s been signed to.
The Kansas City Chiefs have gotten aggressive in trying to fix the issues on the roster. This is a team in serious need of a spark. To that end, Brett Veach has certainly gone out of his way to provide that spark. Let’s hope that the signing of Darrelle Revis gets this team back on track.
