Kansas City Chiefs: AFC West has become a joke

Heading into the 2017 season, everyone crowned the AFC West as the best division in football. The Kansas City Chiefs and other three AFC West teams have proven that’s incorrect.

Were it not for the Los Angeles Chargers completely manhandling the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, the AFC West would have been embarrassed by everyone in the division. The Kansas City Chiefs got beat by a one win team, the Oakland Raiders were taken to the woodshed by the Patriots in Mexico, and the Broncos lost their sixth straight game.

After a season in which two AFC West teams went 12-4 and another went 9-7 and just missed out on the playoffs, this spiral is a little tough to believe. No one in the AFC West is truly deserving of making the postseason, and that was indicated this past weekend.

The Kansas City Chiefs will probably win the division, but that’s not the same honor it was a year ago. No, the AFC West has become what the AFC South has been for the past few seasons. The winner will get the four-seed in the playoffs, giving them a home playoff game. From there, however, we know what to expect.

The Chiefs won the AFC West last year and went 6-0 in the division. The Raiders were also 12-4 in the league, but the Chiefs had the tiebreaker over them. It would have been nice to see this division be a little more competitive, but that has not happened.

Right now, here’s what the standings are in the pathetic ol’ AFC West:

More from Kansas City Chiefs

  1. Kansas City Chiefs (6-4)
  2. Los Angeles Chargers (4-6)
  3. Oakland Raiders (4-6)
  4. Denver Broncos (3-7)

The Chiefs’ early season victory over the Chargers is becoming bigger by the week. Los Angeles honestly could be the best team in the division if they knew how to close out games. They absolutely crushed the Bills this past weekend and that defense is getting scary. This is a team that, if they play their cards right, could get into the playoffs as the six-seed.

While making it to the playoffs is always a good thing, the NFL isn’t like the MLB. MLB playoffs are an environment where literally anything can happen. The NFL has less parity and is going to be about the same two teams in the AFC, as per usual.

If the Raiders had anything resembling a defense, the Chargers could close out games, and the Broncos had an able quarterback, the Chiefs would be in trouble. Instead, they’ll coast to the playoffs and we know what happens next, folks.

Get ready, Chiefs fans! Our team will probably win the division and we’ll get some cool t-shirts that say “BEST IN THE WEST” or “WE OWN THE WEST” or whatever. A week later, the Chiefs will probably lose to the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead while DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry combine for 200 yards rushing.

It’s going to be a good time! (Sarcasm)
