KC Chiefs: ESPN predicts Alex Smith will be Broncos future quarterback
The KC Chiefs’ quarterback situation has been one of the more talked about situations in the league. Alex Smith is the current starter, but the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes last year. Where will Smith go next? ESPN says Denver.
We all know that when it comes to predicting the future (especially in sports), we usually end up looking a little silly at the end of the day. Dan Graziano of ESPN put his reputation on the line (at least a few years from now), as he recently released an article predicting every NFL team’s quarterback in the year 2020.
The KC Chiefs‘ quarterback wasn’t Alex Smith, which isn’t the shocking part. The shocking part was that Graziano had Smith starting for the AFC West rival Denver Broncos in the year 2020. Say whaaaat?
"When the Chiefs let Smith walk after 2019, the Broncos (still vainly attempting to replace Peyton Manning with Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynchand 2018 draft pick Luke Falk) snatch him up to see what he has left at age 36."
This would be interesting and I can’t say that it’s the first time that I’ve heard the rumblings of Smith potentially going to Denver. The problem is how Graziano sees it happening. Why would the Broncos draft a first round guy and then go and get Smith the NEXT year?
The only scenario in which I could see the KC Chiefs keeping Alex Smith past this season would be if he led the team to a Super Bowl.
Graziano rightfully had Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs’ starter in 2020, which is a great sight to see obviously. Here’s what he said about that.
"The Chiefs keep Smith after he leads them to a Super Bowl LII win over Philly, but Mahomes takes over midway through 2018 when the Smith magic fades. Mahomes dazzles with big plays and frustrates with big INTs."
Okay, did anyone else see the part about the Kansas City Chiefs WINNING THE SUPER BOWL?! That got me pretty excited, but yes, it’s just a random prediction. I’m not going to celebrate anything yet.
The only scenario in which I could see the KC Chiefs keeping Alex Smith past this season would be if he led the team to a Super Bowl. If they won, he’d for sure be back. If the Chiefs lost, I still think they’d keep him, but it’d depend on how they lost. Was it Smith’s fault or did the defense allow a boneheaded play?
If the Chiefs “Chief it” (by which I mean go to the playoffs and lose in the first round once again), then I think it’s safe to say that Smith’s time in Kansas City will come to an end. The Chiefs will attempt to trade the former number one overall pick and hope to get a decent bargain from him.

I don’t see the Chiefs trading Smith to Denver. That’d be stupid. Smith still has a few solid years of football left in the tank, so why send him to a division rival? The Broncos would be back to being one of the best teams in the league with Smith at the helm and that tremendous defense, no doubt.
This would also be kind of funny just because of how Broncos fans used to pick on Chiefs fans because Alex Smith was their quarterback. Now he’d be THEIR quarterback and I bet they’d love having him there. Funny how life works, isn’t it?
Okay, so this is just a silly article from ESPN, but it’s fun to think about this kind of stuff. Graziano has the Cardinals eventually signing Blake Bortles, the Bills adding Sam Bradford, and the Browns drafting Jake Fromm. Poor Jake Fromm. His career will be over before it even really begins.
Another fun one was that Jimmy Garoppolo, who was just traded to San Francisco not long ago, will be with the Jaguars. So that’s a fun one. I actually could see Smith going to Jacksonville when his time as a Chief is up.
What are the other two teams in the AFC West’s plans at quarterback, you ask? Well, Graziano had Derek Carr still with the Raiders and Tyrod Taylor signing with the Chargers. The foursome of Mahomes, Smith, Taylor, and Carr would make the AFC West a really competitive division at the quarterback position. That’d be fun, don’t you think?
