Kansas City Chiefs: Antonio Cromartie says he is available
By Ben Almquist
The Kansas City Chiefs secondary has struggled this year and needs help. Veteran corner Antonio Cromartie has apparently been following the situation and is ready to help.
It has been frustrating to watch the Kansas City Chiefs secondary this season. The Chiefs have struggled in the back half of the defense, which has created some schematic woes for the defense. There isn’t much help out there either. However, apparently veteran corner Antonio Cromartie has noticed, and he is ready to get on the field.
The circumstances of this news are pretty interesting. This was not some insider talk about KC making calls. It wasn’t a sports media outlet talking about available free agents. No, Antonio Cromartie himself made this appeal through a Twitter exchange he wasn’t even involved in.
It started with the Kansas City area 610 Sports Radio textline. Fans were apparently calling for the Chiefs to look into Antonio Cromartie and Darrelle Revis. Of course, 610 tweeted about this, and an exchange took place. Then the unexpected happened…Antonio Cromartie chimed in via his Twitter, despite not being tagged in the conversation.
A Workout Wouldn’t Hurt Anything
Now, I’m not going to sit here and wax poetic about how great Antonio Cromartie could be for the Kansas City Chiefs. He is on the wrong end of 30, has shown diminished skills over the past few years, and hasn’t been on the field working in a while. However, it’s not as though you can argue the Chiefs don’t need any help.
Antonio Cromartie does bring up some solid points. He knows the defense and the terminology from working with Bob Sutton in New York. That is actually a huge plus in signing a free agent. If the Chiefs moved now, Cromartie would also have a couple weeks to get into football shape before being needed.

The only real question here is whether or not Antonio Cromartie has anything left in the tank. As far as that goes, there really is no reason why the Chiefs shouldn’t give him a tryout. There is no harm in bringing a guy in to see if he can help the roster. Worst case scenario, the answer is “no” and Kansas City doesn’t sign him.
The Struggles Continue
We still have yet to see a truly solid game from the Kansas City Chiefs secondary. Even the game against the Broncos featured a number of mental breakdowns and bad plays from the defensive backs. The Chiefs need to find something to help spark this unit into playing better.

Steven Nelson coming back has helped some, in that we’ve gotten Phillip Gaines off the field. His presence helps the Chiefs in the slot, at the very least. However, the other outside corner spot is still a big question. KC has benched Terrance Mitchell in favor of Kenneth Acker, but I don’t see that sticking.
The team also recently waived DJ White, who is now with the Colts. So yet another option is now off the table. Kansas City is running out of ways to address this secondary. While I’m not confident that Antonio Cromartie is the answer, I’m not sure I can give you a good reason for the Chiefs to not give him a workout.
The Kansas City Chiefs are still one of the best teams in the NFL. However, we have seen the holes on this roster start to show through. The Chiefs front office and coaching staff need to do something to address these issues. At this point in the season, the free agent market is pretty thin. So why not give Antonio Cromartie a chance to workout?
