As the NFL trade deadline approaches, there are plenty of rumors floating around. One the Kansas City Chiefs may be interested in is TY Hilton of the Colts.
The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl contenders this season. That is something this team has definitely proven over the first half of the season. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t get better. One area that could use a boost is the wide receiver corps. TY Hilton of the Colts could be a trade deadline target for the Chiefs at that spot.
No, wide receiver is not the top priority for improvement for Kansas City. However, you have to play the market as it is, not as you want it to be. The Chiefs can use some receiver help, and that appears to be where there are plenty of options.
TY Hilton is currently on a team going nowhere and is in desperate need of a rebuild. He’s an established wide receiver in the NFL, and is a reliable target. Hilton is the kind of offensive weapon that could really make the Chiefs an unstoppable offensive juggernaut (yes, you just read those words).
To recap: Blair Kerkhoff had a tweet that the #Chiefs were trading for TY Hilton for a 3rd round pick, then deleted it. Don't know reasons.

Building On A Strength
Of course, there are many people who will say that our offense is just fine without TY Hilton. I agree. The Kansas City Chiefs offense is exactly that, “just fine”. We move the ball down the field and put points on the board. In fact, the Chiefs are one of the most productive offenses in the league.
That doesn’t mean they can’t be stopped. In fact, we have seen the KC offense stymied on a number of occasions. When that happens, you know that another weapon is needed. TY Hilton is the kind of weapon who would have to be accounted for on every single play. That, in turn, also opens up other options for the Chiefs.

It’s not that I don’t like what KC has in Demarcus Robinson. In fact, I’ve been big on him from the very beginning. However, there is no denying that Robinson still has a ways to go in his development. The same is true of Tyreek Hill. TY Hilton is a veteran receiver who can help both of them in that development.
So What’s The Catch?
You don’t make trades in the NFL for nothing. If the Kansas City Chiefs want to add TY Hilton to the roster, they are going to have to pony up for him. With the Chiefs already low on draft picks next year, that’s tough to do and will discourage many fans. However, as a general rule, you should never sacrifice a shot at a Super Bowl for the sake of someone’s mock draft.

The other issue is that TY Hilton has an expensive contract over the next several years. The Chiefs are cap-strapped at the moment, and adding big money to the mix doesn’t help things. However, when you trade for a player, you are not beholden to their signing bonus money. So there is no “dead money” in Hilton’s contract. That means KC could trade or release him at the end of the season with no issues.
There is also the case of Alex Smith. Many people in Chiefs Kingdom, and the national media, are now on the bandwagon of Smith staying in Kansas City. I don’t think that is in the cards at all. I believe the Chiefs will trade their veteran quarterback at the end of the season and move on to Patrick Mahomes. That could alleviate both the money and draft pick concerns in trading for TY Hilton.
The Kansas City Chiefs have their eyes on the Super Bowl this year, and should be committed to making a run for it. That means they need to know when to be aggressive. Adding a playmaker like TY Hilton at the trade deadline is absolutely the kind of move that could put them over the top.
