Kansas City Chiefs stay quiet at the NFL trade deadline
By Ben Almquist
The NFL trade deadline for the 2017 season has come and gone without any moves being made by the Kansas City Chiefs front office.
The Kansas City Chiefs have shown that they are going to be a Super Bowl contender in 2017. That doesn’t mean that this is a roster without any problems. In fact, like most teams, there are a few concerns. However, the Chiefs front office has apparently decided that none of those concerns warranted investing resources in a trade.
The NFL trade deadline has now come and gone, officially ending at 4:00 pm (EST). There were a number of moves made over the past couple of days that took many people by surprise. With the Chiefs having been active in the trade market earlier this year, there was reason to think they would continue at the trade deadline.
However, as with most teams in most years, Kansas City has chosen not to make a move. That doesn’t mean they didn’t attempt to. It just means that there was apparently no deal out there that worked out.
There Was Definitely A Market
One thing you cannot argue for the Kansas City Chiefs front office is that there weren’t opportunities. Several players changed teams over this past week, and there were many more being shopped around. A number of these players would have certainly fit in Kansas City.
Most notably, it appeared that there was a very robust wide receiver market this year. At various points in time, there were trade rumors about Jarvis Landry, TY Hilton, Martavis Bryant, and even Josh Gordon. So there was definitely some talk going on.
Other notable players the Chiefs could have considered included Vontae Davis, who was the subject of some trade rumors. With the Kansas City secondary struggling at times this year, that was a move that could have really made an impact. Safety TJ Ward was another name being floated around at times.
Sticking With What Got Them Here
A week ago, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told his team that the players they needed to turn things around were already on the roster. It appears that he truly meant this as the team didn’t add anyone. Of course, Reid was likely including players like Steven Nelson, Mitch Morse, and Tamba Hali in that assessment.

The Chiefs are getting healthier right now, and that is a major factor in some of their recent struggles. Steven Nelson’s return to the field went very well last night for Kansas City. Mitch Morse was also a clear upgrade over Zach Fulton at center. The Chiefs should be getting more players back over the next couple of weeks.
Of course, the big break for Kansas City will be the BYE week coming up after this week’s game against the Cowboys. Following the BYE, we should see the Chiefs as close to 100% as they can possibly be. It is clear that Andy Reid and Brett Veach are putting a lot of faith into that.
The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl contenders this year, but there are definitely some areas that need to shore up. The Chiefs are clearly going to be trusting the players that got them to where they currently are in this. Hopefully that works out and this team continues its winning ways.
