Kansas City Chiefs: Demarcus Robinson turning potential into product
By Ben Almquist
As injuries have mounted up for the Kansas City Chiefs, they are relying more and more on their depth. Demarcus Robinson appears to be one player stepping up.
When Chris Conley was lost for the season for the Kansas City Chiefs, it was a pivotal moment. The Chiefs don’t have a lot of proven talent on their roster at wide receiver. This is a time where the team needs some of its youth to step up. The good news is that it looks like second-year receiver Demarcus Robinson is ready to do just that.
Demarcus Robinson has been an interesting case study since coming to KC. Disciplinary problems at Florida destroyed Robinson’s draft stock. However, he was still a very talented player. I thought it was quite the steal when the Chiefs got him in the fourth round.
Despite some high praise from draft analysts, we haven’t really gotten a good look at Demarcus Robinson yet. He was a training camp stand out, sure, but that is hardly concrete as he often faced other backups. It is only just now that we are really seeing what the Chiefs got in the young receiver.
A Debut Worth Forgetting
Demarcus Robinson’s debut as a starting wide receiver was less than spectacular. Having worked very little with Alex Smith and the first team offense, it was clear that there was work to be done. When a wide receiver and quarterback first start working together, there are a lot of nuances to learn.

However, this past Thursday night it was clear to see that Demarcus Robinson and Alex Smith were much more comfortable with each other. There were still a couple of miscues, but they also hooked up on several impressive efforts. Robinson finished the night with five catches for 69 yards on eight targets.
That is the kind of production the Chiefs have been looking for in the receiving corps. In fact, in his time with Kansas City, Chris Conley has only put up three games with similar performances. It is altogether possible that Demarcus Robinson is working towards earning a full-time starting job.
There Is A Ton Of Potential
With this being only Demarcus Robinson’s second game as a starter, it’s tough to not be excited about what is to come. Robinson has a lot of natural ability and talent that can make him a dangerous weapon. Getting more reps in the offense is only going to help him more.

Of course, as Demarcus Robinson gets more reps, that will also mean more film for opposing defenses to study. That is always what will eventually determine how good a player is. When your opponent makes their adjustments, can you continue to improve?
I have confidence that Demarcus Robinson can continue to improve and be an effective wide receiver. The sky is the limit for this young man, and he has all the talent you could hope for. We’ll see how things progress as the season continues, but this is definitely a promising start.
The Kansas City Chiefs are having to get a lot of production out of their depth chart right now. Demarcus Robinson is one player who is stepping up to the plate. If he continues to produce the way he did last week, the Chiefs may have a very good problem on their hands moving forward.
