The Kansas City Chiefs went down to Houston and defeated the Texans to move to 5-0 on the season. They won 42-34 against a fiery Texans squad.

While the score looks close, the Kansas City Chiefs never trailed in this game against the Houston Texans. They had a 16-0 lead at one point and kept the Texans at bay in the first half.

It’s a good thing the Chiefs offense was so hot early on, as Houston began to figure it out offensively in the second half. To be fair, two of their touchdowns came once the game was pretty much figured out and the Chiefs didn’t have as many starters in the game.

The game started off about as perfectly as possible for the Chiefs, as they’d score on their first five drives. The biggest knock on them was that on three of those drives, Kansas City would have to settle for field goals. Had they gotten touchdowns on those drives, this game would have been 28-0 right before half time.

Again, the score isn’t the best indicator of this game, as the Chiefs had control all throughout, but the defense didn’t play their best football. They forced a fumble in the first half and sacked Deshaun Watson three times, but they allowed the rookie quarterback to have a great game.

The defense also gave up 144 yards on the ground and let DeAndre Hopkins grab three scores. Two of those came late in the game when the defense had likely called it a night though. Not that that’s an excuse.

Alex Smith has continued to look like a whole new man at the quarterback position, going 29 of 37 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. He still has not thrown an interception and now sits with 11 total touchdowns on the 2017 season. He had 15 all of last year. Yeah, Alex Smith is for real this year.

As for the running game, it took Kareem Hunt a bit to get going, but he finished the night with 107 yards off of 29 carries. The Chiefs never gave up running the ball despite the Texans stopping Hunt early on in the game.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Injuries were big in this game, especially for the Texans, as they lost both Whitney Mercilus and J.J. Watt in the first quarter. That could have been telling for how this game would go for the Texans defense, but Houston still managed to keep the Chiefs out of the end zone at the beginning of the game.

As for the Chiefs injuries, Chris Conley was carted off near the end after recovering an onside kick. He fell to the ground without being touched, which indicates that it could be quite serious for the third year receiver.

Travis Kelce also missed most of the second half with a concussion, but Chiefs Twitter didn’t seem too concerned about the stud tight end missing any time.

Even though the final score was an eight point game, the Texans were only really in this game when it was 26-20. After that, the Chiefs took off and never looked back. De’Anthony Thomas had a jet sweep for a touchdown, Tyreek Hill returned a punt for a touchdown, and Charcandrick West found the end zone twice. It was quite a night offensively for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Next up, the Chiefs will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers into Arrowhead Stadium. The Steelers have the Chiefs’ number and they’re coming off an embarrassing loss to the Jaguars in week five. So, that game won’t be easy in other words.

For now, however, let’s enjoy this win! 5-0 feels good, baby!
