KC Royals fans finally got to see the single season home run record get broken by a current member of the team. Mike Moustakas hit home run number 37 to finally take the record from Steve Balboni.

In 1985, KC Royals first baseman and designated hitter Steve Balboni hit 36 home runs, which sat as the all-time single season record for the franchise for 32 years. On Wednesday night, current Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas hit his 37th home run of the year and now holds the all-time record for Kansas City.

It’s an awesome moment for Moose and for Royals fans. This team hasn’t been prone to hitting a lot of home runs due to the spacious Kauffman Stadium being their setting for 81 games each season, but this year has been a little different.

The Royals have been more of a power team this year and that was indicated by Mike Moustakas’ hot, hot season at the plate. Moustakas was on a roll all season long, but after getting hit by a pitch in July, he slowed down significantly, especially with his power numbers.

Moustakas belted number 36 to tie the record a few weeks ago and it was getting to the point where fans wondered if he’d hit one more bomb to get to 37. He did it on Wednesday though against the Toronto Blue Jays and it was glorious.

More from Kansas City Royals

What makes this moment a tad bittersweet, however, is that Mike Moustakas is likely nearing the end of his time as a member of the KC Royals. The Royals aren’t going to make the playoffs (they’re not eliminated yet, but it’d be a tough task to make it at this point) and the 2017 season is nearing the end.

It’ll be extremely tough for the Royals to keep one of their big time free agents this offseason, let alone more than one. Eric Hosmer will probably draw the attention of the Royals this winter when it comes to re-signing, so that means Moustakas will likely be fielding offers early on.

This season hasn’t been great for the Kansas City Royals, there’s no denying that. A lot of fans are disappointed that the 2017 Royals couldn’t go on one final run together, but this is a special moment for the fans and for the organization. Moose broke a 32-year old record and that’s definitely something to celebrate.

Even though these are the last few weeks of this team we’ve come to know and love, this is a moment that Royals fans will remember for a long time.
