There were a lot of interesting nicknames for the Kansas City Royals this weekend, but these were the five best.

Other names I liked were “Whit Bird” (Whit Merrifield), “Lo Cain” (Lorenzo Cain), and “H” (Kelvin Herrera), but ultimately went with the five listed above. I liked that Herrera took it back to the H-D-H days of just being known as one of the two H’s.

I really don’t like that some guys just used their last names. I get that maybe you don’t have a nickname or you think the process is silly, but have some fun with it! Guys in the NFL would love to be able to show their fun sides and aren’t allowed to. MLB is giving players a chance to show their personalities on the diamond and that’s pretty spiffy.

Personally, if I were in the major leagues (fat chance since I’m a female and not even close to being on Ginny Baker’s level yet), my nickname for this type of thing would be either “Leighroy” (like Leroy Jenkins) or “Leigh Hate Me” because… Well, you know why.

Easily the best MLB nickname of the weekend though was Kyle Seager of the Mariners, who simply went with “Corey’s Brother”. Corey Seager is the bright young shortstop of the Los Angeles Dodgers and I thought it was clever for Kyle to take a shot at himself with that name. I laughed pretty hard when I saw that nickname.
