KC Chiefs fans have always had mixed feelings on quarterback Alex Smith due to some limitations he has on the field. The haters should keep in mind, however, that there are several NFL teams who would LOVE to have Smith as their QB1.

In what could be the final year of Alex Smith wearing a Kansas City Chiefs jersey, a lot of fans are looking forward to the reigns being handed over to first round pick Patrick Mahomes. It’s understandable to be excited about the rookie sensation taking over in 2018, but don’t forget what Alex Smith did for this organization. He’s been one of the best quarterbacks the Chiefs have ever had and I think a lot of Chiefs fans take that for granted.

No, Smith isn’t the best quarterback in the NFL right now. Hell, Smith isn’t even a top ten quarterback, and that’s okay. All he’s done since coming to Kansas City is lead the Chiefs to four straight winning seasons and three playoff appearances. Oh yeah, and he won this franchise a playoff game for the first time in two decades. That’s definitely something.

If the KC Chiefs made Alex Smith available for trade tomorrow, teams would jump at the chance to trade for him.

When looking around at all of the NFL teams, there are a ton of squads that would kill to have Smith be their quarterback. One of those teams is the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Big Cat Country writer Ryan Day had high praise for Alex Smith when writing about six options to replace current Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles.

Day wrote,

"Alex Smith tops the list here. If he’s on the Jaguars to start the season, this team pushes for an AFC South title. That’s how much of an upgrade Smith would be."

Wow. Now granted the AFC South is trash, but it’s hard to debate what Day wrote here. Smith would do for the Jaguars what he did for the Chiefs. He joined a team that went 2-14 in 2012 and led them to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth in 2013.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Look at some of the teams in the NFL with the biggest quarterback questions at the moment. Don’t you think the New York Jets would love to have Smith on their team? What about the Denver Broncos? I bet even the San Francisco 49ers would love to have Smith back.

I’ve always been a big Smith supporter, but I get where the frustrations have come from with him. He’s not a risk taker on the field, which can be annoying in those big games.

With that said, however, the article from Big Cat Country made me think about how Smith is really taken for granted here in Kansas City. The guy has been the quarterback for this organization during one of their best eras and it doesn’t even seem like fans are grateful at all.

Think of it this way: If several other teams would kill to have the quarterback currently leading your team, that says something. If the KC Chiefs made Alex Smith available for trade tomorrow, teams would jump at the chance to trade for him because he’s a winner and capable of leading bad teams to brighter futures.

Kansas City might be gearing up for the Patrick Mahomes era after 2017, but hopefully whatever team lands Alex Smith won’t take him for granted. He’s done a lot for the Kansas City Chiefs and I wish fans were more appreciative of him.
