The Kansas City Royals Should Sell…

Jason Vargas

Seemingly a surprise from the get go, Jason Vargas has been an outstanding starting pitcher for the Royals, surprising us to the point of him making it to the All-Star Game this summer. That makes it even more sad that it is time for him to pitch elsewhere.

The Royals probably won’t make an attempt to re-sign Vargas over the offseason, so why not get something in return now?

Again, this is another player where the value exceeds the production and the benefit of trade. Vargas can be sold for some filler for the farm, or better yet, more bullpen aces.

Vargas’ consistency is not a complete guarantee, which begs the question, is he better to sell now as a Cy Young award contender then betting on his future? It may be safer to go with the first option. As of now, Vargas has been posting an ERA of 3.06 for this season along with a record of 12-4.

Jason Vargas has been an outstanding contributor for the Royals and has kept them in contention for the AL Central, but it is time to sell. The Royals probably won’t make an attempt to re-sign Vargas over the offseason due to their other impending free agents being bigger priorities, so why not get something in return now?

Once the decision is made, teams will be flocking to pick up Vargas for their rosters because he’d be a great third or fourth pitcher to have in a postseason rotation. When the Royals sell, look at Vargas as one to go.
